A right Geezer in the local last night told me he can avoid the M50 toll after dark by switching on his full beams as he passes the camera point. He also has the back bulbs and front bulbs removed from his Rug carrying van ;) (incase they have "aft cameras for the back of your vehicle:confused:
I am not into this sort of thing myself but is this a myth or possible
I am sure they do use licence plate recognition software based on visual images...;) Plausible or Myth, Lets bust this
And the same guy wanted to know would i like to buy a rug from his van also  i declined :P

Ah the old "Barstool Expert" you have to love it when guys talk the biggest load of rubbish in pubs and expect you to buy a word of it. You can be sure he is in paying his toll every time while telling people about his foolproof 'system'.

if it can tell reg despite side light, main lights, fog light, spots and any other combination, I don't see it having an issue with high beams TBH.

illegal but unlikeyl to ever be stopped for it...

They must do, the whole system has to be automated, you couldn't visually ID every vehicle or you'd need hundreds and hundreds of staff. I'm sure any questionable pics are flagged for human inspection though before final judgement.

Assuming it to be true (a huge stretch), the proper word would be "evaded" rather than avoided. Avoidance would be not to put oneself in the position of being charged the toll, by using a non-tolled route.

Our overhead cameras and detectors record your number plate. Lights or “high beams” as mentioned above have no impact on our cameras and system. Therefore, I can confirm that this is a myth. Hope this helps.

There appears to be this thread from two years ago. Nothing yet has contradicted it that I see.

Not having number plates showing isn't listed in this unless it's considered to make a car unroadworthy or similar.

If it's considered careless driving, then that would be worse.

What if you had an LCD display for your number plates.

However if you had it split top and bottom and alternating oscillations on and off at 50hz it'll look regular to the naked eye. But the camera wont pick it up, just the same a TV screen caught in a photograph.

I'm no traffic cop but you really are picking it out of air if you reckon that a dirty reg plate would be considered careless driving.

i imagine IF you were pulled up you would be cautioned to clean it at the very most.

I regularly see dirty and unreadable reg plates on roads all over Dublin. A combination of bad weather, and laziness? So I can only assume there are also plenty of people driving through the M50 toll with unreadable plates.

It may be against the law to have an unreadable plate, but its incredibly common.

It's usually only Back Plates that seem to be unreadable as dirt splashes up on the back of a vehicle, it is very rare to see Front Plates that are unreadable most likely to because of rain washing them clean, as the Cameras on the M50 read your front plate it is very unlikely that they will be dirty enough to make it unreadable.

Unless you go and make them mucky on purpose for this reason :D

Does that mean motorbikes are exempt from paying the M50 toll?
