Why are all the western counties bigger than the eastern counties?

    I was looking at a map of the country and i noticed that all the large counties are located at the western side of the country. just wondering why?

    Fewer people. What's the merit in having a county with a population of 3,000 if it's the same size as Louth?

    I'd say it's to do with the land quality for the most part. I mean, remember Cromwell? "To hell or to Connacht", cause of the poor land quality. Poor quality meant needing bigger areas to compensate.



    Sorta like guys that buy flash cars to compensate.

    Counties in the west needed to expand further to capture enough good GAA players for a team.

    Up the west. Cork is the largest county with Galway second.
