Surely time to abolish "Student Specials"

Was emptying my pockets in eddie rockets today and while I was in there I noticed an offer that was a Student Special. In this day and age, aren't we all as disadvantaged as students?

Surely it's just a poor marketing decision to limit specials to a particular group of people nowadays.

Eddie Rockets do meal deals for 6 quid now. If you cant afford 6 quid you should be eating at home.

    With no disrespect op,

Eddie Rockets? You're not poor enough yet then. Not pulling half-eaten subs out of bins. You'll be alright. There's worse in the world.

No, you misunderstand. I don't want to take the specials away from the students but the media are telling us every day about how we're all in a bad state and how people are in arrears etc...so doesn't it make sense that these "specials" should now be for everyone? Do students feel more special cause they're the only ones getting the special?

The other day i got on a bus and asked for a single. "Eight euro please"

The person behind me asked for a student single. "Eight euro please"

I dunno. Apologies if I'm talking nonsense.

There's more student meal deals now than there ever was, so clearly they're a nice earner and Trinity students unions keep emailing new ones...the latest discovery was the Long Stone pub were doing full carvery meals and a soft drink for €6 om nom nom. Might still be doing..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,159 ✭✭✭✭phasers

They wouldn't be specials if everyone got them.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,243 ✭✭✭LighterGuy

I know what you're saying abouttobebanned.

But lets be honest, the whole "student special/discount" has always been a business strategy to get in the student demographic. Originally created upon the idea that students didnt have much money ... and what ever they spent would rather be spent in a particular business that runs these specials.

Is it just me, or am I the only one who wouldnt have an issue creating a fake college id? lol.

Why are people so preoccupied with what other people have when it doesn't affect them in any way? You're hardly on the breadline if you're eating in Eddie Rockets tbf...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,943 ✭✭✭abouttobebanned

From a marketing point of view it makes sense to have a student special....but from an operational point of view i don't think it makes sense to enforce the student ID rule..they should just give it to everyone and let the students feel special.

Student deals bring hordes of people in, lowering prices slightly for everyone doesn't. It's a business strategy, if it was in their interests to charge students more, then they would.

I'm recommending nothing, but the UCD one would be ridiculously easy to duplicate. It looks like something a 5 year old would clob together (doesn't even have date of birth  )

Aha. Well that wasn't very clear in the op ;)

Well students do have less money than the rest of us. Dole is about 40 euro more than what I ever got in any part time job.

The student market is huge. It makes perfect sense to target them.

your as disadvantaged as a student

students when you were in college weren't disadvantaged - try going back to college now and tell me it's the same as when you were in college financially

What? That's just nonsense. When I was in college there was plenty of people with fcuk all money, people with enough money and people with plenty of money. Yes, the recession has affected a lot of people, but the above is still true.

You should put yourself forward as an Independent in the election. Ireland can get out of this hole by saying no to the IMF bailout and the Abolishment of "Student Specials". In the words of a wise old Irish philosopher "down with this sort of thing"
