Does 2008 'diesel' automatically = cheap car tax?

I am told that if you buy a 2008 (or later) diesel engined car it will only cost between €104 & €156 car tax for the year, but I have also been told to be careful, because you must make sure that the car was originally registered during or after July 2008, so do cars registered before July qualify? and what about imports from Britain & NI? do they qualify if registered in the UK before July 2008?

Fingers crossed that 'all' 2008 diesel cars qualify for the cheaper tax bands!

    Thanks in advance . . . .

Might be worth using the search function. This has been answered dozens of times. Answers here. In short, pretty much everything you have heard is wrong.

Not really, Many post 08 Alfa diesels are €447 to tax, and some VW/Seat/Skodas are €302. All depends on the emmissions.

If its on an 08 plate, it will be taxed on emmissions. however if the car in question is cheaper to tax under the old system (typically large petrol engines), it can remain on the old system - this applies to cars bought before July 08.

Early 08 passats are 302 to tax reducing for newer . 08 bmw 530d 600 approx. 08 Mercedes cls diesel €1000 approx.

Anything being imported now, if its getting an 08 plate will be taxed on emissions. Check tax disc or log book if buying an irish car or if looking at uk car, check the licensing cert of the actual car for Co2 figure

I am in the same boat at the moment, a site that I have found that I found helpful is the https://www.motortax.ie/OMT/menu.do?page=motortaxinforeg

If you have the reg it will tell you the tax rate.
