Extended Applecare query

    Hi,
I have an Iphone 3GS with only 28 days left on the warranty. The mute switch on the side of the phone has developed a fault and doesn't work properly. My Iphone is unlocked and jailbroken as I bought it secondhand a few months ago. Is there an issue with getting this cover on an unlocked or jailbroken phone? I presume I just back up everything and do a restore before I send it off to them.
For €68 they will give me 2 years phone support and 1 years extra hardware support. I'll get a free advanced replacement so no €29 fee and if the battery runs out they'll replace it for free.
Will the replacement phone be unlocked?
Is there a way to save the SHSH Blob things off my iphone?
Does anyone have any experience with this extended cover?

Just to be clear, you get one year phone support and one year hardware warranty. It is 2 years support if you buy it from the beginning, as the iPhone only covers you for one instance in the first 90 days.

I had it on my previous 3G and it worked exactly as you said yourself when the battery wasn't lasting a full day any more. Replacement into my hand before i sent off the original. No, you will not get an unlocked phone if they haven't done the unlock themselves, so you will get it back locked to the original network. With regards to backing up, I'd check the jailbreak/unlock thread stickied at the top, or haver a look at iclarified.com

But if it's replaced under AppleCare, and the iPhone was officially unlocked through iTunes, your replacement will auto unlock once it's connected to iTunes.

I love AppleCare. I've had three models of iPhone now. Before handing a model down I get it swapped out/replaced under AppleCare to refresh the battery etc. Very handy indeed.

I've even walked into the Apple Store in London and left with a new iPhone after my old 3G developed a crack on the base. It's well worth it.

We'll have people like you to thank when they start making it much harder to get a replacement when we have a genuine problem.

That wont happen. Apple are so widely loved an appreciated because they make it easy to get a problem solved
via a replacement if its required.

Believe me if you think they're not already charging us for it (even before you buy Applecare) your mistaken.
I'd say they can afford to replace a phone four or five times and offer a new one before they are in any sort of
negative financial position themselves over the whole thing even taking into account UPS delivery charges.
They didn't make $4.31 billion last quater by being stupid.

Remember, every broken one is fixed, fitted with a new casing and sent out as a replacement again. Most
of the issues are with a faulty volume slider or battery or cracked casing all of which cost Apple pennies.
And they have it all sewn up that if you have broken any expensive parts (the screen digitiser etc) that
you have to pay for it yourself because its physical damage by the user.

Not making excuses for the guy above who is abusing the whole system though.
