Golf Van TDi

I was wondering if I am able to tax and insure a Golf Van Diesel TDi as a private use? e.g. It will not be a commercial vehicle. I have about 7.5k to spend on something that will get me from Portlaoise to Dublin economically. Something Golfed size, Octavia?, a Golf Van seems to make sense. I never have any passengers in the back, less weight to carry around...what do you think?

So with my budget of 7.5k, am I better off going petrol?, seems you can go up in years and lower the mileage over the diesels.

I am struggling to find anything decent for that price. Everything is 2005 with 100k on the mileage....
