Ice Cream - Art Project Help?

I didn't know whether to post this here or the Junior Cert forum, so move if you like, but I figured I'd get better advice here. (:

For my JC art project, I have to make a 3d piece. I'm planning to make a giant ice-cream sundae type thing, but I have no idea where to start. I'm supposed to be making it using paper mache and I think my teacher mentioned something about using polystyrene balls as scoops of ice cream. Again, I've never done anything like this and my teacher is really of no help.. So does anyone know how I could get around to doing this?

How big do you plan on it being? If I was doing something like that I'd use expanding polystyrene foam for the icecream. It's an aerosol used for sealing gaps in insulation. Do some tests first and don't get it on your hands.

Where can I get that stuff? :) Art store or a DIY place I'm guessing? It's going to be pretty big, maybe twice the size of a real sundae.. :)

DIY place. What will you use for the dish?

My art teacher told me to use a plastic bottle, so I've collected a few that have nice designs on the plastic. I think I'll be cutting them up and gluing them together. Then she said I'll be making paper mache fruit and stuff. She actually suggested yesterday that I use cotton wool for cream and such, but I think that the foam you mentioned would probably look better. (:

Hi I found a video on you tube that shows the foam I'm talking about. Important that you follow the safety tips - it's impossible to get off anything it bonds to- including your skin

if you wanna make syrup, heres a handy tip. mix pvc glue with paint. drip it on top and it'll set and have a nice shine. PVCs great stuff! :)

you could also paper maching the sundane glass but wrapping something the right shape in cling film and then paper maching on top or glueing bits of plastic bottles together in a pattern?

In this project we discussed the wonderful, Wayne Thiebaud. As soon as the students see it involves food, they are instantly hooked. By the end of the conversation that day, we were all craving a little mint-chocolate-chip (my favorite!). Today, the students finished their ice cream cones with watercolor. They first added sprinkles and such with oil pastels. I didn't know what to do in the background, so I decided to have them kept white for now. If something hits me, then we'll add to them. For now, I like the focus to be on the tall yummy stacks of ice cream.
