A lot of dealers advertise on Carzone which is why a lot of the cars are more expensive

Donedeal is €3, carzone is €39.99, at it's peak I'd say carzone had 30% of the cars on their site private sales, I'd say that's down to 5-10% now as the cost is prohibitive. It used to be €30 and that was when things were decent enough in the country, their pricing model needs to change and drop substantially. Having said that the search function on donedeal is $hite and littered with loads of rubbish people put in their ad to bring up the search results, I suppose the low fee of €3 encourages dodgy ads to be posted by people with no intention of selling.

Carzone is a ripp off especially if your buying an old car. Donedeal is your man. Although alot of dreamers on donedeal of late.

Because some sellers are dumb and have no idea what their car is worth. They see dealer asking prices in the likes of carzone and automatically think that is the going rate. This trend has started happening on DD now too.

Donedeal would be fine except for the morons and tagging every car make at the end of there add, so when your looking for a ford it brings up every VW along with the 5 fords for sale. Very very annoying

    I've stopped using carzone altogether.

Carzone is truly grim, donedeal is awful as well. I don't know why both are so lousy when autotrader.co.uk shows just how it should be done.

Probably because all the junkers drag down the price, similar to the way a nice house can be devalued if surrounded by junky dens :D

Personally I think DoneDeal is shocking unless you're someone who doesn't really know what they want and are happy using a generic search term.
Plus the complete lack of formatting for car details on donedeal is pathetic - I'd never use it for anything over €3k.

For anyone who requires any sort of granularity, carzone is the only way forward. Plus you can have multiple tabs open and quickly compare every facet of multiple vehicles.

Once you've picked the perfect motor, yes a quick trawl of donedeal's rubbish is definately worth it incase a gem is lurking, but initial research has to be carzone IMO.

I love the autotrader uk site, has all specs by model which makes comparing them easier. Surely carzone could get together with the likes of jato and compile specs from the registration number etc.
Irish ads leave out too much detail and in a lot of cases sellers don't know what model/spec they're selling

I hate the new Carzone - very slow search.

I use the old format found at http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/

    donedeal is the way forward!
once you push through the crap, theres some great cars on there.

ive sold every one (4) of my cars over the last 2 years on there and bought most of them too :)

Searched for "ford mondeo" in donedeal, and I got BMWs, VWs, Audi's... lol.
Found: 34,868 ads for Cars in Ireland

Went to Google, in inputted: "ford mondeo" site:donedeal.ie
    About 5,640 results (0.14 seconds)

Google replies with 10 Ford Mondeos. The only disadvantage is that the ads are at least one day old.

I would be inclined to buy off DD and sell off Carzone..

Do you reply to 5 month old Donedeal ads?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,849 ✭✭✭condra

I'll tell you in 5 months.

At the height of it there was enough business and competition for numerous websites to compete. Goin back 7/8 years ago CBG was actually the most popular and Carzone were small fry. But Carzone were smart and started building websites for their customers and went on to hosting both distributor and franchisee websites and before you knew it you were tied in to Carzone whether you liked it or not which is still the case today.

Before things went to sh1te Carzone, CBG, Cars Ireland, What Car and a few more all had a piece of the pie, so much so that a company formed a hub where you could upload to their site (Carlister) and it would feed to all other sites the dealer was subscribed to automatically saving dealers having to upload multiple cars to multiple sites. At this stage many dealers were actually employing full time marketing managers just for one individual dealership! Done Deal was in its infancy and no one would have bought a car from a bargain basement site anyway.

In 2008 the whole house of cards fell apart and dealers began to pull away from advertising on multiple sites as their revenue fell and they didn't have the same advertising budget. Plenty of sites offered the same product but the vast majority of dealers, franchised and indy, were tied in with Carzone via their website.

As things got worse private sellers were no longer willing to pay €40 to advertise their car for a few weeks while they could stick it up on Done Deal for two months for just €3. Done Deal is basically an online version of Buy & Sell and if B&S were quick enough that market could have been theirs - but they weren't.

By now the availability of credit had disappeared so while you would have been looking at a €20k car on Carzone you were now looking at a €5k car on Done Deal. Simply put, most of us are in the sh1tter right now and can only afford what I call a 'Credit Union Car', i.e. something bargain basement for sub €5k if not much less. Now where are we going to find such cars? Done Deal!

But let me ask you something: If you had €40k to spend on a tasty motor would you be searching on Done Deal or would you be looking for a reputable dealer on Carzone? Unfortunately I don't have €4k let alone €40k but if I did I know where I would be looking.

There seem to be alot of conmen on donedeal if 96fm in cork is anything to go by in the last few days.

The carzone app for iPad is very nice. Only thing that bugs me is difficulty of filtering out commercial vehicles when searching certain 4x4s.

Also once saw a website which required advertisers to specify the condition of their vehicle: eg, you couldn't just put 'showroom', pristine, mint etc, but these terms would correspond to eg, no kerbed alloys, absolutely no bumper scratches, valeted and unmarked interior etc. Very good idea

I sold my car on Donedeal. It was only a few months old when I advertised on Autotrader which included a package for 7 sites including Carzone & for €54 it was the biggest waste of f*cking money I ever spent. All I got was spam emails & they only stopped recently after 1 year!!

At least on DoneDeal there's no spam!!

    Because cars sell on DoneDeal....

When carzone changed form €30 ads that stayed online unt sold (providing you told them you wanted to renew the ad for free), it was all down hill.
I've only sold a on donedeal once & it was gone within 24 hours. I only got the one call mind you - but 1 was all I needed :D

I do think the donedeal search engine has definitely improved recently. It used to be truly shocking. Now it's just ok

    Carzone is Autotrader!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,222 ✭✭✭bigneacy

The done deal search engine defo has improved recently. Any car i've ever bought or sold in the last year or two was off done deal.

Not for lack of trying either. I had cars up on every site including the site owned by the people who own boards. Must have spent almost €100 advertising on that one in the past - never sold a thing from it. Money down the drain.

You wouldn't see this on Carzone:
    http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/2241226

"would swap 4 a horse". Luvin it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,849 ✭✭✭condra

OK I'm eating my words here, but FWIW, I sold my car today.

I had ads on Done Deal and Carzone for the last week. In that time I recieved texts off 6 people. 5 of them saw the ad on Done Deal. The other one just said, "I saw your ad on the internet".

So basically Carzone was a waste of 40 euro and I'm kinda kicking myself.
    The end.

When all is said and done, most private sellers end up on all the sites - Gumtree, Carnet, Adverts, Buy&Sell when they find they're getting no interest no matter where they advertise.

It's all down to price these days.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,280 ✭✭✭✭Eric Cartman

in 2008 i was selling my jeep

carzone : got 2 calls in a month, 1 of them was off a woman who hadnt a clue and was making a joke of an offer, the other was off cbg to extend my ad

donedeal : 3 people to see the car within 5 days , the 3rd person made a good offer and the car was gone

in october i sold my van , didnt bother with carzone , it was sold through donedeal in 2 weeks

I like gumtree and the fact that it's free to put an ad on, there is a lot of scrap on that site but always seem to have a better chance at grabing the odd bargain.
Any car i've sold has being on DD and gumtree and i always ask where the potential buyer has seen the and and I find I usually get gumtree as an answer. (being allowed bump up for free is a big advantage so i can keep it on the current day)
I don't like the new layout of the site though.
