I have got a bit bored of music when I am running and have started listening to radio and odd podcast. Just wondering has anyone anything they listen to, good running podcasts for example? Will have to cut the ipod I know soon but not quite there yet!:p

The marathon talk podcast is pretty popular and normally lasts a bit over an hour. Check out their site here.

Marathon Talk - they are up to episode 55 so will keep you going for a while.

I've started listening to This American Life (as well as Marathon Talk)

Listening to the ipod is fine during training (as long as its safe), great for the long runs. Its only on race day that you should leave it at home.

I used to listen to the podcast 'Phidippidations' (with a guy called Steve Runner) and also the Tri-Talk, endurance planet podcasts and the economist (no accounting for taste!)

Also here's a bunch of running music suggestions:

Can anyone recommend any particular episodes of marathon talk?

Every episode has the same structure - roundup of marathon news, training talk, Tony's Trials (segment recorded by another runner) 'rant and rave', longish interview with a runner, 'winner of the week', and then a countdown to upcoming marathons.
The archive here lists the contents of each episode, and there's a listing of the interview subjects on the right.

Hi, I think the episodes rise and fall with the quality of the interviewees. Comrades legend Bruce Fordyce was brilliant, as was Jezz Bragg and finally I think Rich Castro the force behind the Boulder 10k and that entire boulder running community was really insightful as well. Those three episodes really stood out for me. I'd pay extra to never hear tony's trials again though, but maybe I'm just a grumpy old sod.

As an M40, you totally qualify for "grumpy old sod".

Are all you guys listening to MarathonTalk as you run? Must be where I'm slipping up....

Sure that's the best part of being m40.

What about music? Would the majority listen to podcasts?

I'm more of a music person I find it much easier to disengage my mind from what the legs are doing.

"Best of Moncrieff" from Newstalk has some truly classic listening. I liked "God Hates Ireland" best of all, but there are lots of good ones.
