bmw gearbox problem

    Hello Everyone.

    I have a bmw 2004 5 series 530d.

Over the past few months it has not been changing gears right, as in its been very jumpy going up and down the gears.

But lately its jumpy in the reves, for example, when its gets up to 3rd gear its starts to rev up from 1500 reves to 2000 reves and wont change up a gear.
But if you give it the boot it changes up but it could then just change down as quick and start jumping in the reves again. It seems that it doesnt know which gear it wants to select.

I have had the egr meter and air flow meter changed, aswell as the glow plugs. Also had the intake manifold removed and cleaned out, aswell as the gearbox oil changed. These things have improved the reving of the car, but the gear change problem is still there.

I will just have to bit the bullet and bring it to the main dealer, but just need to see if anyone has incountered and of these problems and could advise me.

    Thanks.

    try resetting the autobox ,

You turn to ignition to position 2 before it turns on. push pedal all the way down past the kickdown button and hold for 45 seconds release then start car and take it for a drive when it will learn your driving style. It worked for me!!:)

if that doesnt work get the software on your gearbox updated to the latest version ;)

Most autoboxes will only learn a drive's worth of behaviour, not a week or month's worth. They have 10-12 programs they can select from based on various different conditions (warmup, high efficiency, winter, sport etc), but they're not intelligent as such. A reset will only reset the driving style to default.

Just don't bring it near a BMW dealer, Conway Transmission in Dublin have a very good reputation and are BMW specialists.

    From honestjohn.co.uk

If the autobox starts changing up and down of its own accord, try disconnecting the battery, leaving it disconnected for 12 hours, then reconnecting. That reboots the transmission electronics and can solve the problem.

This was about E39, but worth trying.

will he need to ensure he has radio code for this one?
    (no idea myself)

bmw pluged it into computer today, they said there where 42 faults but nothing came up regarding the gearbox. So they havent got a clue whats wrong with the gearbox ssue.

But now they say that the car wont start, and when they plug it into the computer it says theres a fault with the diesel tank pump. So to get it started it will cost a new pump at 1100.00 euro.

Keep in mind that when the car went into them it was running perfect.

are they trying to rip me off, or have they got a clue.

Sounds like a joke to me. Wouldn't be bringing the car anywhere near a dealer.

I would go else where with it...

I don't think they are trying to rob you as such, I call it the 'mechanics curse'. It happens:( one of the lads I work with, we serviced a 320D and when we had it done the car would not start. Turns out not only was it the lift pump that had failed but also the high pressure pump too. The chances of that happening are less than winning the Euro millions.

I wonder is low fuel pressure causing any of this funny gear changes? Could be;) Don't be foolish, bring it to another garage, get a fuel pressure test done and see does it need a pump or not. Can you get your hands on the 42 faults, I'd like to have a look.

Well dealer called me yesterday, they got car running, I NEW WELL THE PUMP WAS FINE, I suspect that when i kicked up about a new pump, they realised they couldnt charge me for it.

Then they went to take it for a drive and said they couldnt steer it as the power sterring had failed due to the belt tensioner been faulty, and the belt had fallen off the pully.

The steering was perfect when it went into the dealer.

When i asked about the gearbox issue they have said that they need to drive it to clear the faults on the computer in order for them to look into the gearbox managment system.

Such a load of ****e, these dealers rely on computers to tell them whats wrong with these cars.

I have spoken to a gearbox specialiste, and as they say if it is a mechanical problem in the car no computer will tell you that.

Anyway car is with gearbox guy, he says he can sort it out as he has seen this problem before.

I have to say that the dealer,{ on the nass road} really didnt give a ****e about the car all they wanted to do was to put new parts into the car charge you 107..00 per hr labour, and then see from there what other way was there to screw me.

Take my advise dont deal will the main dealers, there are better garages out there. Now i know why these Main dealers garages are all covered in glass, ITS SO THEY CAN SEE YOU COMING.

OP I suggest you stick in a new battery and see what it does to all those faults.

Your car may still have the original BMW battery. A dying battery can lead to a mad set of (incorrect) faults in that car.

Which gearbox guy are you using?

    auto tranz in walkinstown.

My guess would be that the guys actually don't know what the computer is doing.

I would guess as a matter of course the system will try "up-grade" some/all of the software on the vehicle to the "latest" which can cause no ends of problems/conflicts.
