Hi, hoping someone might be able to give me some advice on which might be the better car.
    1. Mitsubishi Lancer 1998 - 50,000 miles on clock, serviced once in 7 years.
    2. Ford Focus 2001 - 117,000 miles on clock, regular ford garage service, new timing belt, generally well looked after.
    Thanks

From this I'm guessing you own both of these and want to scrap one?

    Keep the focus obviously!

Seems like a fair swap. Same value and Focus is definitly in good shape... Hope you will take better care ofthe focus though this time round :P

as far as i know and i cud be wrong but your brother would have to be the registered owner for the past 12 months of any car he wishes to use for scrappage

as far as which car is better id take the focus

You are right there. Infact its 18 months and must be taxed for previous 12 months something ridiculous like that.

New car will have to be registered in your name then changed into his. Make sure there are noimplications if hes doing hire purchase for example.

Yes, the person purchasing the new car under the scheme must also be the registered owner of the vehicle being scrapped.

The way around that is for the OP to have the new car registered in their name, and then when the sales transaction is complete, to hand it over to the brother and change the registered ownership to him.

The only minor disadvantage for the brother is that the car will be on its second registered owner within a month or so. A good brother won't mind!

The Focus is a great car to drive BTW.

Just swapped a high mile 97 almera for a 00 focus with only 70k genuine miles immaculate inside and out before christmas .. only went with it because the almera needed a thermostat and there was a tiny leak in the heater matrix.

Anyway I'd take back the almera in the morning, focus is a bucket about 15mpg less than the almera, power is at astronomical revs, feels like you're driving around in a plastic box. It is marginally better in the corners than the almera as the almeras have NO ANTIROLL BAR!!!

If the focus is 1.4 don't touch it prone to piston ring failure, totally underpowered and unecomomical.
My friend just swapped the 1.4 in his focus estate for a 1.6 in November and it drives like a totally different car.

Thanks everyone for all the advice, I think I'll take a chance on the focus :)
