Blue Screen Problem on Asus G50v

    Hey Guys,

Run in to a problem with my laptop yesterday when it suddenly came up with a blue screen stating there was a memory dump and it was forced to close windows thus shutting off laptop immediately. So i decided to dust off my boot cd/dvds from purchase as i haven't reinstalled windows since i initially bought the laptop almost 2 years ago, and that this could be the problem. unfortunately this did not solve the problem and once i was logged in, on windows the blue screen came up and laptop died.
I Thought it could be a hardware problem and more than likely the memory, I have 4 gigs installed in formats of 2g. I took out 2 in alternating sequences to see if either were causing the problem but unfortunately that was not the case and the screen of death still happens upon logging in on windows.

I am thinking that it could be the laptop hard drive as the laptop is a over 2.5 years old.

If any of you kind gentlemen or women could shed some light on what steps to take next to an uneducated boardsie on this particular scenario i would be most appreciative.

    Cheers in advance

also the error messsage that comes up when the computer restarts is....

    problem signature: bluescreen

Boot into a LiveCD (for example Ubuntu) and see if that gets you a BSOD. That'll help narrow down whether it is the HDD or not.

What's the GPU, was it one of the ones affected by the Nvidia solder defect, and had it been showing any signs of trouble (funny lines on the screen etc)?

have you recently installed any new software, or updated drivers?
Can you boot into safe mode and perform a restore?

Its the 9800m which does get hot when running alright, i haven't pushed it for gaming or even used it for gaming for over a year, the closest thing to a workout it got recently was Boardwalk Empire in HD which isin't much in fairness. No funny lines or anything like that just the BCOD.

    Hey Francois,

Initially when it crashed after a few times i went to system restore, half way through system restore the battery died on laptop.(my bad)
When i went charged her up and went back in, the restore point had disappeared, this forced me to boot in safe mode and take all my files off on to external HD, this was the point when i got my boot discs and upon installation the same problem arose. the fresh install installed perfectly from boot discs but unfortunately it will not boot in safe mode stating it is not fully installed with full software support etc.
I can not install these drivers as i keep getting the BCOD.

Yep, normally i download an Ubuntu iso and then use unetbootin to create a bootable usb stick.

It doesnt need to be Ubuntu, just any Linux distro that lets you get in there and use the system. If it is crashing or unstable with a Live distro then you can pretty much rule out the HDD as the cause.

Ubuntu is stable running from the pendrive, i guess that means that the harddrive def needs to be replaced ya?

nothing is plugged in to the laptop at all, checked the dvd drive there and it didn't crash under ubuntu.

Where would this message be?(restart or BCOD)

    on the BSOD

if you can get in in safe mode then it will also be in the event viewer

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc785339%28WS.10%29.aspx#BKMK_2

    does it say DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

so looks like it could be a recently installed or updated device driver

Yes sir, thats the message that comes up alright.
Would the best option be to format the hard drive ya?
If thats the case vista doesn't allow a full format of the hard drive so i would need to root out an xp disc?(or is there another way around)

Cheers for the info by the way, it is appreciated.

got it sorted with just wiping/formating the hard drive completely, cheers for the help lads.

p.s. gone back to ubuntu as it is so user friendly and a faster boot.

They're doing strange things to gnome in 11.4 so don't upgrade till the dust settles ;)
