Looks like we went through 500 litres in a month, which we have never done before so am a little concerned. Are there any good ways to secure our oil tank to prevent against theft?

Secure it in garage or shed, there's no way to prevent theft as the thieves drill a hole in the tank with a hole saw.

Get a Galvanised cage made for it, expensive but does the job.

I agree. Just drill a hole in the tank. The cage is a bit garish looking though, would you really want that in the back garden?

I'd prefer to build a wooden fence around it - high level.

Build it in concrete blocks make a roof over it and a small hole in it where they can fill your tank
Close it with a little door with a lock

With the cold snap i lose almost 150 euros oil just heating the house

    Hi

I work for an oil company and I'm afraid it's possible it wasn't stolen at all, but used during the cold snap. I had many customers coming in thinking theirs had been stolen.

With the increase in price per litre and the cold snap I saw customers ordering more oil after filling €200 only two weeks earlier.

Also, I was told by a colleague that on average, the consumer uses 4 litres of kero per hour! Ouch!
