Connecting laptop to tv

I have a mate trying to connect his laptop to tv.He can get the picture but the sound is coming from laptop and not tv.He using a vga cable and another for the sound.Anyone know what he's not doin?

vga cable is only for video. HDMI is both but he probably doesnt have it as hes using vga. What i do is connect my home cinema trough earphones connection
