Strange noise from my Vivaro

My taxi - a '05 Vivaro 1.9CDTi with 220,000km - has started making a funny noise in the past few days and I'd appreciate your opinions.
To be honest it sounds for all the world like someone stuck one of those big bore exhausts on it but I've checked underneath and no-one has. Nor is there any obvious signs of smoke from the manifold or exhaust so I don't think there's a hole in it.
The noise isn't discernible when revving the engine in neutral but mostly when taking off quickly through first and second gear but it's gone again I get rolling in third.
I'm wondering is there perhaps something worn in the transmission which could be causing this?

    Your thoughts...

Given the failure of the clutch release bearing in those vans is very common I'd guess that's the problem. Any idea when it was last replaced? Have you noticed any change in the clutch pedal recently (softer/harder)?

Hopefully its not the above as it's an expensive fix both in terms of parts and labour.

    Thanks for the reply jimbob.
I don't think it was ever changed.
The van is driving fine aside from the noise.

Gearboxes in these would not have the best of reputations.

Very hard to diagnose over the net though

Yeah Slidey, it could be all sorts of things but it's often mentioned here and elsewhere that the transmissions in them are soft so I'm worried that that's what it is.:(

Hi Hermy, my bro has a Primistar, basically the same wagon as your own- the gear box has just gone, its an 06 with 100,000k's. Started off with a woefull noise coming from 1st, 2nd and 3rd. The lads in Bohernabreena gear boxes said that they would have expected it to have gone sooner- he pulls a fair bit of weight around in it but its no excuse. Seems to be a soft spot with them. Nissan Bray gave a quote of €1600, the crowd in Bohernabreena came in at around a grand- think he got the clutch done at the same time. He left it in Friday, was supposed to done on Sunday/Monday but its still not ready and he depends on it for work but that seems to be par for the course here.
    Hope all works out ok-
If your using it as a taxi its probably not an issue but on the Nissan version if you break a front window you can press the open door button on the dash- that will open everything up for whatever scumbag is about- its an easy fix that was done by the dealer in Bray but I don't think many people know that is the case.

I think vivaros/traffics were the mainstay of the Bohernabreena lads work, had two traffics done there myself.
    Awful sh1tebox of a van

Well the car was at the doctors today for a health check and among other things the rear engine mount needs replacing. That would explain a lot but not the problem I described in this thread. That problem I'm told may have something to do with the turbo but they won't know that without taking it out. So that's all for now.

This is the engine mounting that needs replacing.

Is it a straightforward job to replace it myself?

It looks straight forward. From here it looks like just 2 bolts.

The engine may shift slightly when you take it out so you might need someone to give you a hand to get the new one back into place
