but the original release was crap and the remastered version was hard to tell from the original as the date and production company was apparently the only way of telling each other apart.

The remastered release had a TrueHD track whereas the original release didn't. So you just need to check the box to know which is which, or check the full track listing if buying online.

the original was transferred from a sub-standard master tape, there were noticeable flickers and blacks appeared washed out, apparently the DVD version was far superior in video quality. Sony then remastered it and re-released it the following year, but used the same cover art, so telling the two apart was difficult, but Sony did offer an exchange program.

The version thats coming out this June is the remastered version, but with a lot more special features.

Even though the original version was withdrawn, you or I may come across a copy second-hand. So now there re-relaesing the remaster, i'll be sure to get the right one.

I hadn't noticed an issue with either of the DVD versions I've watched although I suspect both were the same version. I picked up the DVD 2 Disc Special Edition 2003 Pathe release a while back in Game Stop for 2 euro (well 2 DVDs for 3.99 actually) and have seen the 2 Disc set and a single Disc version in the same shop since so I guess there are a few second hand copies around.
