Viable options for working while travelling on career break??

    Hi all,
I'm taking a career break next year to travel and see a bit of the world. I know I won't have enough money saved to last me the whole year and I am planning on working as I travel. However I don't wanted to be tied down in any one country for the whole year, but rather work as I travel from place to place. I ama qualified teacher however I'm willing to work at anything from hostel work to bar work to TEFL, anything just to get by and save enough to move on to the next place. I was looking into spending 6 months in Oz in the middle of my trip just to earn money to travel some more after that but a lot of people I've spoken to say the cost of living is so high in Oz and it can be hard to get work. Also I don't have any huge desire to go to Australia. I'd prefer to go to places in South America and Asia and do things like TEFL...

Or am I kidding myself thinking this will work?

Is this even a viable option?

Ideally I'd like to end up somewhere in Asia towards the end of my trip and work there for a longer period of time, or even extend my career break if I got work and live somewhere else for a year.

Basically, the money you'd make in the places you want to go wouldn't get you very far when you're travelling. Many people have tried this, and it's very hard to make it work. You'd spend most of your year away looking for work. Anywhere that'll pay you well would be looking for a one year committment (even holding on to your passport in case you flee in some cases). Other than that you could just freelance TEFL, but even then you'd be taking on students and letting them down a short while later.

The money you can make in Ireland is so much higher than what you'd make abroad that it works out much easier to keep working here until you have enough to travel for a year. Usually about 15,000 is normal for one year of travelling.

Or else look into ways to freelance on the road via the net. I do translations while I travel. But again, you end up working so much that it's not much of a holiday.

As for hostels, they mostly offer free food and a bed in exchange for work.

If you really have only a little bit of money and really want to get away asap, try only going to one or two countries but settle down there. This is what I did in Peru. I found a family to stay with, they only wanted 100 Euro a month and they fed me too. I learned the language and saw the sights and it was all very cheap, and I got to know the country much better than a regular tourist would. You might hear of working opportunities in neighbouring countries while you're there too.

As you are a qualified teacher this should give you a bit of an edge over many other people who look for this kind of work with being a native English speaker their only qualification if you could call it that. But if you are lucky enough to find a job then what you can expect to earn in Asia will probably only be enough to get by while you're there and not enough to fund the next part of your trip.
