The goverment are bringing in a photo id card for taking welfare payments to replace the current dole card to clamp down on fraud, but they wont be asking anybody to submit a photo they plan to use excesting photos on file in the passport office. NEWSFLASH NOT EVERYBODY HAS A PASSPORT.

    Me too

If you dont have a passport theyll ask for a photo. Its actually a good idea for once, no need to ask everyone for a photo and no need to pay someone to sort out the 450,000 odd photos and assign them to an ID card.

I'm pretty sure they'll have a system in place for people that don't have a passport, eg, taking a photo in the social welfare office like they do with student travel cards.

...or maybe not. Sure, nothing wrong with a bit of mystery ;)

Better get a passport before you become unemployed then.

Everyone knows that people on the dole take regular holidays to their second homes in Lanzarote so they'll have a passport...don't be worrying.

I look like a gypsy child in my current (about to expire!) passport. The possibilities are endless.

How is this a dumb idea?

Damned if you do, damned if you don't...

Well for the few that don't have a passport I'm sure they will contact you.

Shame they can't do anything about bank fraud. You know, the ones that cost billions.

why don't they just take pics of everyone that is on the dole and put them into a central database and ticking off the pic from the central database once payment is signed for. up in the local office .... if the person wants to collect their money they need to bring their own pic up to the desk !! ...no pic ..no payment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,129 ✭✭✭✭Oranage2

This is an outrage, they expect me to pay 6 euro to get a picture taken?.......Oh wait!!! yep sounds like somebody done something right to deserve his/her pension. One step closer to micro-chipping now!

    Is this confirmed?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,272 ✭✭✭EverEvolving

Done a quick google search there, apparently 70% of Irish people have a passport. Not very sure on the accuracy of that though as it was a wiki answer.

Anyone have any idea where I could get an accurate answer?

It's a good idea, Instead of giving out a social services card with your PPS number, it could just as easily be an ID card.

They'll have a permanent Social Welfare Porno-photographer on call for such purposes. You'll probably get more dole if your balls are dragging along the ground.

That's not a dumb idea at all.

If your only problem with is that not everyone has a passport then you haven't given it all that much thought have you?

Why can't they just ask people to bring up a photo id with them when signing on instead of wasting money making them one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,405 ✭✭✭gizmo

So let me see, the government introduces measures which will help combat social welfare fraud in a manner which doesn't penalise the vast majority of people AND does so in a manner which will help keep costs down by reusing existing assets and people still complain? Wow.

I'm guessing the new cards will be harder to counterfeit?

Your supposed to have ID on you when collecting the dole but from what i've seen when in the post office they never seem to ask anyone collecting it. It will be the same with a photo on it. The person behind will only be seeing a big queue in front of her and wanting to get rid of it. The card will be swiped without them doing much of a check. Not saying it's a bad idea. But i just think it won't make much of a difference.

there is some thing to the idea of having one ID card for government services, especially when all it's used for is as an identity token

    HSE issued health insurance card
    HSE issued Drugs payment card
    IBTS card
    Social Services card
    Library card

obviously I don't want to loose a passport, so it's a case of how many eggs per basket

Why? if he doesn't plan to travel anywhere.

The reason the clerks in the post office don't ask for photo ID is because not everyone has photo ID ie; a passport or a driving license. It's not mandatory in this state to have photo ID

This will close that loophole for Irish Citizens. What photos will they use for people who are citizens of another state but are recieving a social welfare payment here?

I'm in the post office a lot during the week and they barely even look you in the face. It's even worse when you see someone handing in the card. It's picked up with their head down, swiped, thrown back out, money counted and put in the slot. And if someone is committing fraud i doubt they gonna send someone years older or younger than then. It's usually a mate. So the date of birth ain't worth shít. Not to mention i've mates on it a long time that have never been asked for ID. And you'd wanna be good to remember everyone that comes in over the course of a week and associate them with a name.

Why don't they give everyone the same photo, then if you have the misfortune to become unemployed the HSE alter your face with plastic surgery to look like the photo?

These new cards contain RFID technology.

This leaves them exposed to scammers and identity theft even if it hidden in your pocket.

Make sure you keep it secure in a lead lined wallet. :p
