I've been reading the sticky on STI clinics in Ireland and it just struck me that I have a very limited knowledge on the subject. This probably sounds ridiculous but how can they be caught, does there have to be contact with semen? Is this the case with HIV/aids aswell or am I way off?

The short answer is that all STIs can be transmitted via unprotected intercourse.

Most can also be caught via unprotected oral sex. Although the more complex viruses such as HIV are far more difficult to transmit via the oral route.

You could write a book on the variables relating to each particular infection/virus.

Maybe if you could ask some specific questions you might get a more fruitful answer altho the sticky will actually tell you everything you need to know

    Check out the ThinkContraception website.
Bite size pieces of correct info :)
Well done for being interested in finding out more.
It's really important to know your stuff before or if you are sexually active.

Basically STIs are caught from semen, sylvia, breastmilk and blood. Any bodily fluids basically.

Depending on the disease, they are absorbed into your blood stream through the penis, vagina, anus, mouth - even eyes.

Even though oral sex carries a lower risk of infection, it's increased greatly if the person has any cuts or sores in their mouth - in which case even HIV/Aids can even be spread through kissing.
