Do I need R Plates in NI?

I passed the test about 8 months ago in the Republic of Ireland. I will be driving to Belfast next week - do I need R Plates? Or does this only count if I passed my test in NI and have a NI/UK Driving Licence?

In my opinion, being restricted to 45mph doesn't make a lot of sense (actually dangerous on a motorway), but it's not my opinion that counts :o

Also, am I insured to drive (I'm with Aviva) in Northern Ireland? I can ring them tomorrow to clarify.

No R plates. Since you have an Irish license. And as for insurance, it'd be best to ring tomorrow morning to clarify; but read through your policy docs, it should say it in there. Usually most policies cover you for 30 days outside of Ireland. But again, if you're unsure ring tomorrow.

By law insurance will cover you in any EU state 3rd party only. Of course your policy may in fact offer better cover.

For the duration of the policy. They may limit comp cover to 1 month.
