v-max question

well lads, i have a question for ye.
i'm using hornady 55gr v-max on foxes, and i have found them to be a very effective round, but the last 5 or 6 foxes i've shot have had little or no damage on the exit side. normally these rounds blow a nice sized hole out the far side of the fox, but the last few have been different. i shot a lad this morning and except for a bit of blood trickling out either side of him, there was no sign he was shot.
have any of ye experienced this or have ye any explanation for it?
i will add that i've never had a runner while using these, all the foxes i've shot have dropped on the spot

I would say that the round didn't hit any bone on the way in and therefore didn't start to expand.

Agree with Clive, execpt that the round would fully expand in the fox. The only reason for massive exit wound is the bullet catching bone. Is he like a bag of jelly around entry/exit wound?

A mate had a 17REM and that rarely left an exit wound, but the fox would be like a bag of jelly due to expansion.

Don't worry, the Hornady are working perfectly

i bet if u gutted the fox you wouldnt even find a heart. the bullet probably left off all its energy inside the fox making mince meat off his organs

It usually is a result of not hitting bone like clive says.
Sometimes you will get a entry hole and no exit which is a result of the bullet
    breaking up inside the fox.
It would intresting to open up a few foxes with a knife to see the damage inside.

I have a photo of a heart someplace, I'll see if I can dig it out. NUIG Zoology student sent it, out of one of the foxes I gave him. Can't for sure remember what round I was using then, very likely to be Vmax though could have been a Federal bulk pack hollow point.

thanks for the info lads. i was out again tonight, shot 3 and two of them were fairly mangled, so the v-max's are working ok. it must be the fact that they're hitting bone when they do the most damage
