Friend has this issue, has progressed from colors going awry for last few times it was used.

Its 2.5 yrs old so is it worth repairing and if so where in Blanchardstown area?
    Thanks
ps will it work as is with an external monitor which I have available?

It might be graphic chip failure, but should be fine with external.

I have a 1720 and it is roughly the same age. The colours sometimes go very wierd indeed, from pixelation to graphics in programs disappearing. Has only happened a few time so far. It is the graphics card "dieing", it happened to my brothers desktop and he had to replace the graphics card.

If your friend decides to repair it, then he'll save a lot by fixing it himself and ordering the pieces from ebay. A repair service would be costly and probably not worth it.

Incidently, I'm looking to buy an old 1720 for parts, if by chance, he decides to upgrade. Regards

Edit: The external monitor will not work if the graphics card is dieing.

Is it completely blank (i mean screen) no picture at all?? If it's there very very dark it means that backlight gone. You can try this: restart laptop, keep pressing F12, use the diagnostic utility there it will check everything there, if there a problem it will tell u. There are 2 reasons: video card, backlight or inverter.

    LCD inverter burned.
Take it out and check visually if you can see burns. Or if you have multimeter just check transformer(usually problem there). If that's the problem note part no and get one from ebay around 15 to 60 euro. Replace with new one and pray :D
LCD inverter sits usually in the monitor housing so don't tear everything apart just disassemble the monitor.
    hope that helps
    good luck

    Thanks for insights,
F12 test : failed to detect LCD error code 2000--0321

The following Memory tests both failed when I ran the dell self test within windows before I saw the F12 idea

    Memory Address
    Memory Auxiliary Pattern
    Memory Modulo20
    Memory Advanced Pattern

    wants me to run stacktraceparser.exe

ps I did run the registry cleaner product from CCleaner as it is a suggested solution tot his issue but the problem still persists

which I cant find in home vista

That code means "Unable to detect LCD" -Seems like the cable that attaches from the LCD to the videoboard is either loose or damaged. Just to be sure hit up dell tech and confirm what the issue could be.
Here is something about stacktraceparser.exe http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100126172003AAXnFgc

    Keep US inform
Btw. take off RAM modules and put again.

I'd look myself (me don't trust those utilities) anyway you have to disassemble to check cables if inverter is ok
