Valentines day viewing....

    Alright folks?

Every Halloween i get some mates and their wives/girlfriends up to the house for some horror movie viewing and its usually pretty succesful.
After a viewing of Martyrs last year, the conversation turned to maybe doing the antithesis of that night around that dreaded day in February.

So i'm trying to plan it at the minute and i've realised i'm not entirely au fait with the more romantic genres of film.

So far i'm sitting with Amelie, Before Sunrise/Sunset and Garden State, but theyre all films i know pretty well.

So, has anyone got any suggestions of that ilk, nice, pleasant, funny, romantic style films that dont come under the usual rubbish we know as "Rom-Com's"?

Amelie is a good choice. Maybe go for 500 Days of Summer as well; it's really a "guy's Rom-Com" if that makes sense.

    Before Sunrise/Sunset.

I know that you have mentioned it as one you know well but there is no better romantic film..... well maybe Scott Pilgrim

500 Days of Summer is a brilliant film and is not a rom-com really.

The Proposal is funny too and has the excellent Betty White in it. It does fall into the rom-com but is not too sickly sweet.

I have heard It's Complicated is funny too

Jack Goes Boating, You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger, Whatever Works, Eagle vs Shark, The Puffy Chair, The Brother's Bloom, In Search of a Midnight Kiss, Punch-Drunk Love...

I thought 500 Days of Summer was great but definitely not a valentines day movie. Its about
    rejection
    for god's sake! More a
    hate story
    than a love story imo.

can't go wrong with before sunrise, amelie or punch drunk love though.

500 Days is probably the worst choice for a valentines day movie lol its about a relationship falling apart and how love messes people up, not exactly fluffy viewing.

    Groundhog Day is very sweet.

I would say High Fidelity. Geat film, very funny and as much as it may not seem it towards the beginning is a romantic film.

Also as a fun movie but still romantic, Stardust.

    It's not like it's Irreversible, I'd consider that a worse choice:p

    RE 500 Days of Summer
Yes, it's about love gained and love lost, but he isn't a beaten man at the end of it or anything. He gets over her and it's nice to see that he's moved on at the end. I watched it with my other half and we both enjoyed it.

By all means OP, don't go near it; but I hardly think it should be dismissed completely.

I've seen 500 Days of Summer and to be honest it isnt one i would rule out completely.

I'm not specifically looking for "It all ends happily ever after" here, bittersweet is good, if not better than the fairytale ending.

I like the bittersweet endings as well, maybe because they're more realistic. Probably one of the many reasons I like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind:)

How about The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - good love story and not gooey at all

    or

The Secretary - bit of eroticism going on in it!

Check out Quiet City, fantastic indie 'romance' that would bring to mind the likes of Before Sunset. Simple story of a guy and girl meeting on the street, but minus the usual cliches and delivered with an engaging naturalistic style.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,255 ✭✭✭Renn

I recommended that too - and it must be somewhat decent if the script is laden with the word like.

Actually, you should watch The Princess Bride. Total crowd pleaser.

If you like Amelie, what about Delicatessen? Zach and Miri Make a Porno also sprung to mind, but might not what you had in mind:P Is quite sweet though! When Harry Met Sally is also a good one, if everyone's not seen it already.

Other than that there's some oldies like Some Like it Hot.

    Dirty Dancing :D

    edit: Already suggested:(

I'd say a fantastic film as a centrepiece would be Paris, je t'aime. Obviously an antology but all the stories centre on love in some manner and more than a few are brilliant short films -- with quite a crew and cast featuring. I thought it was a refreshing change of pace from a regular film, no doubt aided by its overall quaility. It even caused a mini-genre of location based antoolgy films to pop up so maybe the New York or Tokyo films (both seem to be worth a look in their own right, but I've yet to watch either) might be an option.

I have a deeply cynical view of romantic films. I generally hate them, though 'Four Weddings...' and a few of the Woody Allen films I've seen like 'Annie Hall' are brilliant. As a complete cynic, my recommendation is a little seen gem called 'Confetti' from 2006.

As you can tell from the below trailer it's very much a Christopher Guest rip off, but it is very funny and has an awesome cast. A romantic comedy...for cynics of romantic comedies

I would second some of the choices in this thread and add:

Once. Yeah that one. Its a beautiful little film and the musical moments really add to the atmosphere and story. Great ending too.

Chasing Amy. You might not get away with this one if the ladies arent film fans but it is the story of a romance at the end of the day. Very funny too. Particular the tribute to Jaws as they compare wounds from naughty encounters!

Amelie. Its been already suggested but I give it the thumbs up. Fantastic film, beautiful shot and quite funny. Its french with subtitles though.

yeah Amelie will definetly be involved somewhere along the line, myself and the mrs and one of the other lads are big fans of Jeunet.

I'll need to take a look at some of the other suggestions, but i like the idea of Paris Je t'aime - its one of those ones i keep picking up when buying DVD's but then finding something more pressing and putting back down.

Eternal Sunshine would have definetly been on my list if i hadnt watched it when it was on TV last week.

    Cheers for the suggestions folks!

Easy A - not really a rom com more teen comedy and I know quite a few guys that enjoyed it could be because it stars Emma Stone though

Jack Goes Boating was recommended earlier, id second it, it shows two kinda awkward people falling in love, Phillip Seymore Hoffman and Amy Ryan, where can ya go wrong :)

been years since i seen them but Noting Hill and It Could Happen To You were good films, noting hill is kinda a rom-com but it seemed more awkward than funny, plus there both old enough so no chance anyones seen them in a while,

yeah Jack Goes Boating could be a good call, ive never seen it but as you say...you cant go wrong with Phillip Seymour Hoffman in general.

Another rule has now been put in place though - Simply no Hugh Grant or Colin Firth, under any circumstances. :D

    100 girls...awesome teen flick!

Love Actually - What a charming film. It incorporates many characters lives and subsequent decisions.

When Harry Met Sally - Ah now you can't go wrong with this one. Friends for a long time and they are each in relationships but not with each other. It is a feel good movie.

    and my top recommendation -

A Good Year - Excellent storyline and a movie to cuddle up on the sofa with.

Hang on a second. I'm reading a lot of soppy weepy stuff. :p What happens to the guys and girls who aren't with someone. I can only thing of one film were that sort of thing happens. Some heartless people like me need a word in too!

    For your consideration:

This is a bit more on the serious side of romantic, but abolutely awesome:
