Can anyone please explain how I can get this installed?
I thought the OpenJDK Java Runtime in the software centre would cover it but clearly not.

Also, could anyone explain how I can make a bootable usb from a windows iso image file? I've given Linux 6 months or so and this sort of shlt makes it completely not worth it.

    1: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Java

    2: Unetbootin

3: The "****" can be solved with a little research. What specifically are you having trouble with the Java runtime enviroment? OpenJDK is a preferred choice imo. What is the problem?

.iso images aren't just for windows btw, they're a standardised file, in fact ISO stands for "International Organization for Standardization" (seems like the got the letters the wrong way around)

I know yea, I used to use them for games.. And you sure Unetbootin works for creating a bootable windows USB from Ubuntu? Pretty sure I've tried this before..

Got the Java working finally.. And lost 20euro in online poker for my efforts.

The boot process takes place before windows or any os kicks in, saying windows bootable is irrelevant, shows you dont really understand what's going on, and that's why maybe in the past you didn't get unetbootin working, I'm guessing, :D it works perfect under windows or any Linux distro, although with ubuntu it is dependent on have 7zip installed before it will run, and you need to make the run file executable also

I understand perfectly what's going on. In my opening post, it's obvious I want rid of ubuntu.. not have an OS on a usb key.

I want to make a bootable iso of a windows install disk so I can install windows onto the current ubuntu partition. It's a piss easy process to make these bootable usbs on a mac but it doesn't seem so easy on Linux.

It's been 5 months since I've tried it so I could be wrong but isn't unetbootin only for creating linux boot disks?

I had exactly the same issue as you yesterday, and I got it sorted.. I googled and found that this fixed my issue..

    1. Open up Ubuntu Software Center.
    2. Go to Edit | Software Sources | Other Software
    3. Make sure that the following ARE clicked..
    http://archive.cononical.com/ubuntu karmic partner
    http://archive.cononical.com/ubuntu karmic partner (Source Code)

Then from the terminal run the sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jdk sun-java6-jre command.. worked for me first time.

    its piss easy...insert usb

open startup disc creator, select iso, select your usb stick...make startup disc

    doesnt get any easier

That only works for an ubuntu .iso

well in that case, dl unetbootin
    make it executable
install dependent 7zip from sw center

run it, locate windows iso, select usb, create bootable iso :D

See what I mean about ubuntu being absolute effort. Everyone has to come online and get help for the most menial of tasks.

Is there any chance installing Windows on the first partition over ubuntu will disrupt my main data partition?

RTFM tbh. ext3/4 partitions cannot affect NTFS partitions once the partitioning is performed correctly. If you won't engage with the process of reading documentation, maybe Ubuntu isn't for you. Not being nasty, but it's not Ubuntu's fault you percieve any "effort".

Linux stands on it's own merits. Why should it become a direct copycat of Microsoft Windows? It's Unix-like for good reasons imo. It's not hard, just different. if you don't like Ubuntu, why are you sticking with it?

It's hard to change OSs while jumping from hostel to hostel. I don't want to stick with it.

    Thanks for the info though.
