All responses appreciated, I do like the look of the big screen I must admit and I may have to go hospital in a couple of weeks for monitoring and I was seriously thinking about getting one of these to keep me entertained.

Also do the Desire HDs come unlocked when you go bill pay?

    Thanks

depends on the network you pick i believe.

i have the normal desire and its ok. hospital? get a laptop maybe?
dunno whats allowed in hospital :)
im guessing both are similar costs on bill anyway so may as well go with the HD. better screen resolution and a few minor improvements so why not :)
besides that wait for the duo core phones to come which should be awesome, but something always aroudn the corner so may as well pick up what you can before getting stuck in hospital :)
all ill say abuot the desire is battery life is terrible for me. using apps a lot you will use the battery in a matter of hours. bring your charger :D

Mines unlocked anyways and I bought it from Vodafone. Id much rather this (hd) than the standard desire. There isn't a lot in the difference though.

Thanks for the replies, there is a difference of €130 between the two phones, another question does the desire have the sense UI?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,590 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

    Yes, both have Sense.

    http://www.maggadget.com/android-warriors-htc-desire-vs-htc-desire-hd-vs-htc-desire-z/

basically bigger screen, more internal storage and a better camera. i must admit the desires camera is pretty poor considering...so if its an improvement maybe its worth getting..

from that spec i really cant see where the extra 130 euro comes in.
someone else wants to cancel contract in another topic because they found one where its free on bill pay

You must not have done much research. The only thing common with the desire and desire hd is the name. The HD out performs in every aspect.

Just one thing you asked about Sense - they both have Sense but they're running different versions of it. SenseUI and HTC Sense (DHD). They're really all the same but the DHD version has a lot more customization. The Desire has a slightly better screen type but it's not something you'll notice unless you have both beside each other comparing. Also the 4.3" screen size is amazing. :D

i got a Desire and my mate has a HD Desire and another mate got a HD Desire recently.

Main problem i see with the HD Desire is covers are hard to find for them, theyre also very big as phones, the Desire can fit in your pocket, HD wont, and holding it its quite big. Battery time between both there seems to be a huge difference, my mate is charging his HD twice a day( i dont know his usage though, probably a bit of 3G but no GPS ), my Desire needs about 1 charge a day if i have wifi on most of the day.

I would have got a HD if i wore a shirt most of the time so i could stick it in that pocket and also it has more mem and is faster for games( i wouldnt say faster in general as i dont notice the regular desire being slow in anything really, plus dual core phones with Tegra chipsets will be out soon which means phones in 6-8 months time will be a LOT more powerful )

On the screen type, the Desire has an OLED and the HD has a regular LCD, looking at them both together theres not much difference, however in the summer outside the Desire should look a lot better as the HD will be a good bit more difficult to see if the sun is behind you.

HD fits fine in my pocket with no particular problems.
Cases aren't that hard, or expensive to get. eBay.
Battery life: Two days of moderate usage.

    Screen: Original desire wins.

Desire hasn't shipped with AMOLED screens for a while now, so you're not going to find one new.

Yeah but thats what i mean though, i popped into Meteor and picked up a nice flappy leather case for my Desire for 15Euro, for the HD you have to do ebay or similar as theyre not that easy to get( im only saying this as my mate tried to get one in phone retail shops in London, Dubai and Dublin and did some checking online )

I'd prefer the Z over the HD and that over the Desire
DHD is too big for me :)

    All are great devices

My HD fits into my jeans pocket no problem - just don't keep anything else in there in case I scratch the screen.

Case - loads of different types - easy to get, add nothing really to the size.

Battery - 24 hours normal with battery callibration and Juice Defender.

What I find is posters are always biased towards whatever phone they have. I am glad I have the HD (Mrs has the normal one). She is probably glad she has the non-HD one.

As for dual core phones - how long before the software is tailored to such an environment? When dual core PCs were first introduced there were loads and loads of software that wouldn't work on them - either performed slower or were not safe to run on multiple CPUs at the same time.
What will be the initial price and how long before they are competing at this level?

I dont consider myself biased towards any phone, it is after all just a phone :). Most of my points are what my mates are saying about their HD's.

Hd fits in my pocket no bothers with a box of Carrolls and matches etc.
There are tonnes of covers to get for them. Saying that I don't bother with the leather case I got for mine because you have to flip the front up to see the screen and I find that real poser looking kinda.
Battery is ok on it for me. Plenty of sockets around here .

Anyone who has a HD that doesn't fit into their pocket has got a small pocket problem, not a large phone problem.

Mine fits in my jeans pocket grand, and I'd probably fit another 2 of them in there I'd say!

WTF kind of small ass pockets do you people have?

OP I'd say if its your first smart phone go for the normal Desire. If your really into phones go for the HD one. It'll be worth the extra money then.

    Good luck in hospital!

Wow, thanks for all the replies!

The size of the phone when clubbing won't be important to me really as I'm 8 months pregnant on my third! Ha ha!:D I really doubt if I will ever really see the inside of a nightclub again, ah the good old days!

I already have a VF845 and I find the screen is just too small for usage I have to say which is why I'm tempted by the huge desire hd one, I will go and compare both in the shop tomorrow I think.

    Thanks a million everyone.

if you are already using Android DHD is defo a good choice!

    Hi OP,

I have the original desire and I also work as a salesperson for O2.

I would have lovin' to get the Desire HD however at this stage the desire HD is about to go out of date. This is because from the 14th-17th of Feb at the mobile world conference , all the major manufactures will be announcing their new line-ups for this year. We should see these in Ireland within the next 3 months or so. HTC will be announcing their flagship models, which should all have the benefits of the Desire HD. Wait for these announcements before making your choice.

Desire hasn't shipped with AMOLED screens for a while now, so you're not going to find one new.

It has an SLCD screen instead, which is noticeably superior to the DHD's standard TFT screen for viewing angles and saturation.

The same screen is found on the Desire Z, I believe.

It'll probably run a Qualcomm dual-core, ie a Cortex A8 and thereby a generation behind Tegra II (which is already old) and the upcoming TI OMAP4.

I love HTC phones but their adherence to old Qualcomm chips is disheartening.

    Go for the Desire HD.

I had the same problem a fortnight ago, trying to decide whether to go for the Desire or Desire HD - I went for the Desire HD in the end and I am glad I did.
You get used to the size of the screen in a day.
The battery life isn't that shocking, although if your playing games, using apps, a lot of browsing you will need to charge it after 6/8 hours but if your gonna be in hospital that shouldn't be a problem.
Cases are not hard got for it - go onto ebay and you have an abundance of choice, mine cost €4 and I'm delighted with it.

Oh.....and all the best with the babs!

I've had a Desire since June. Somebody in work got the HD recently and I'd swap in a heartbeat. The larger screen is much nicer I think. Also if the camera is any kind of an improvement then that'd definitely be a plus as the camera on the desire is fairly rubbish.

Wouldn't be arsed buying a HD though as it's not that much of an improvement on what I already have.

The HD fits in a jeans pocket no problem at all.

Both are great phones. My take: if you're interested in hacking, rooting, installing roms, etc. then go for the Desire. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but the developer community for the HD doesn't seem hugely active, compared to the original Desire where there's all sorts of custom roms available.

And if you're not interested in that, none of it made sense to you :), or you just really want a bigger screen, get the HD. The extra size is the only thing to question and after a day you won't even notice it. It's updated software, updated hardware (both 1ghz but the HD is newer and better processor), on-board storage for apps and a better camera.

the DHDs Modding scene is more than adequate, it'll be getting support from we've long after HTC forgets it ;)
