    Hi Folks,
I see a lot of posts about Dual Fly Wheel. Mine is in the early stages of going. Someone might answer a few questions.
    1. How long can you drive with dodgy DFW? Days, Weeks, Months?
    2. I hear that it breaks up and particles get in the Starter Motor. So this would be another part that would need replacing. How much is a new Starter Motor?
    3. How much should I expect to pay from a Main Dealer? I see quotes of £650 to go up North but I dont fancy that.
    4. If i'm getting new DFW is there another labour intensive part I should get replaced at same time?
    5. Is a single/solid Fly Wheel an option? Is it much cheaper?
    Cheers!

Depends how you drive, how long you drive it for etc. When you begin to hear loud enough banging and vibrations, then get it done.

Never heard of a starter failing from debries from the flywheel but sure its possible. Expect about €250 for a new starter.

Flywheel about €400, €20 for new flywheel bolts. clutch + release bearing about €200 - 300. Then factor in about 5 hours labour
    4. If i'm getting new DFW is there another labour intensive part I should get replaced at same time?
Clutch + release bearing, as above.
    5. Is a single/solid Fly Wheel an option? Is it much cheaper?
Its cheap but not cheerful, you bought a comfortable car so keep it that way. Imagine selling it in a few years and driving with one. It would shatter your bones....

Also don't get too down about it, the vast majority of diesels will have DMF problems eventually.

The was someone on here the other week, quote around €1000 for a dealer to do in ROI, 750 to be done in the north. Don't go the solid route, bad for the car in the long run.

    .

Except you wont notice any difference after driving 5 miles!

I got the flywheel done in my car, wasn't sure if it was a dual mass or solid was fitted, I got around to asking a few months later. I thought it was a dual mass one, but actually it was a solid one, and I could never tell the difference.

Thanks all! I will probably go with the Dual. I have a mechanic that did a bit of work last year including a service. I'll go back to him and get the dreaded price. I'll ask the main dealer as well just to compare. I'll have to wait a month or so until the Piggy Bank fills up!:)

When you say its in the early stages of going, what symptoms are you getting?

I brought it up to a mechanic as there was a swirling noise from engine. I though it was a belt or something. He stopped and started it a few times and there was a rackety sound when he turned on/off. The clutch is a bit hoppy when I put my foot on it. He said come back when the noise gets worse and he'll confirm what it is.

    Larrymac,
On the starter, the carbon and bits of metal from the flywheel work their way into the starter. I got my flywheel done about a year and 1/2 ago. I felt a vibration in the gearbox, i also heard a sqweaky metal noise as i depressed the clutch. When we took out the flywheel, it was starting to seperate. The longer u leave it, the more damage you can cause to your gearbox. False economy letting that go longer if you think its going.
