SyncToy - Running but with errors.

I'm running SyncToy 2.1 to copy files from internal HDs to external HDs.

I've never had a problem with and I'm not really having a problem with it now.

But, I am getting error messages and they're annoying me! :(

I have two folder pairs operating.

The first one generates the following error: Cannot read from the source file System Volume Information\ Access is denied (Exception from HRESULT.......)

The other folder pair generates the following error: Cannot read from the source D:\pagefile.sys (D is the internal HD)

The thing is, in both cases, it completes the transfer of files.

    So, why the error?

I've tried deleting both folder pairs and recreating them. But, the errors remain.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks.

    D.

ps. I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this message. Hope so. ;)

Maybe a permissions issue? Right-click the folder, go to properties, and check the permissions under the security tab. Actually maybe check the permissions of the whole drive.

Given how Synctoy copies files, errors when dealing with system files like pagefile.sys or System Volume Information directories are to be expected.

The only situation I can think of where you'd need to be copying those files from one drive to another would be if you were cloning the disc to make a bootable backup, and Synctoy's the wrong tool for that kind of job.

    Thanks for the reply.

I'm using it (and have been for four years) for making copies of two internal HDs to two external HDs. One internal HD is for RAW image files, the other for edited or processed RAW files. I'm a photographer.

Has served me well so far.

    Thanks again.

It should be fine for that - the System Volume Information directories and files like pagefile.sys or hiberfil.sys are OS-related files/directories, and can't normally be manipulated with simple file manipulation commands from within an OS session.

It's not a problem, though, and you should be OK to ignore those errors. Try setting the "exclude system files" option on your folder pairs, that should stop the errors cropping up again.

you can't copy open files unless you sue something like volume shadow copy functionality

none of the files mentioned are your data

pagefile.sys is your swap file , it's only needed by a running copy of windows, and if its missing windows will create a new one

system vol.. is where windows stores system restore info
you can change permissions, but you''d be far better off using a backup program that can actually save system settings or clone the hdd while windows is offline

I'm having problems again copying images from one file to another. Most of the files are transferred across, but a few aren't.

I've just run Error Checking on the internal drive. (but without either Automatically Fix..... or Scan for and attempt....... checked because I wanted to view a report as to what it wrong)

    The report says......

Some problems were found and fixed (even though neither box was ticked!)

Affected files were moved to a folder named "Found" - I've no idea where this folder is. I can see it on the drive. (I have three internal HDs. This drive is not the C: drive)

Further down it says, 'The volume Bitmap is incorrect.' Windows found problems with the file system.

Should I just run the full check (with both boxes ticked) on this drive and the one it's copying to?

The thing is I am getting errors regularly and this means I'm not ending up with a duplicate copy of the internal drive on the external one.

    Annoying.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks.

    D.

Ps. I also ran the Error Check on the external HD and it's perfect.

I'd say the first thing is to check your source drive's filesystem for errors, and take a proper system backup to be on the safe side.

As for seeing the drive, have you set Explorer to show hidden files & folders, along with empty folders?

    Fysh,

Thanks for the reply. I've run the error check in the past & it's fixed the drive.

But, the fault re-occurs & Sync Toy starts running with errors again.

    Thanks again.

    Update:

I ran Check Disk overnight with both Automatically fix...... and Scan for and attempt recovery........ ticked.

Unfortunately, the green scroll bar was only about an eight of the way across this morning, and the action is stuck on 31227 files processed.

Looks like I have a big problem with this drive.

It, and another drive, were installed within the last year. The other (used for processed TIFFs and Jpegs) has never given any problem.

So, before I waste a couple of days taking it to the doctor, any more ideas?

    Thanks.

    D.

    Final update:

Gave up and took it to the doctor. Disk failing, so had it replaced.

Only got six months from it - a Western Digital. Will be getting on to Dabs.ie tomorrow. Not holding my breath.

It should be well within warranty then.

But external drives should be handled like eggs , I'm amazed at the abuse they get !

That's disappointing, but you're well within warranty so they should replace it easily enough. TBH I'd almost go direct to WD at this point. Have a quick look at their downloads page - they usually have a diagnostic utility that you can use to determine exactly what's failing, once you give them that info they're normally pretty decent about providing replacements.

What type of drive was it, incidentally?

I agree, I always RMA stuff direct to the manufacturer when possible. It cuts out an extra complicating and delaying factor in the whole process.

    Thanks for the advice guys.

    This is the drive.........

    http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/2tb-hdd-7200,2430-3.html

I bought two. The other is fine....at the moment! :o

It's no longer on Dabs.ie for whatever reason.

    D.

ps. A bit late for diagnostics now that it's out of the box.

pps. If I have another slot, I'll just add the replacement drive.

The 2.5 disk might d be better than 3.5 as some of them have shock resistance being designed for laptops. I've a few 2.5 externals and have been chucking them in my bag for years with no problem.
