    To be blunt:

    Shannon, yes

    Ennis, no

    Just look at the photos.

Played Ennis last year and wasnt impressed.Woodstock would be a better option.

Agreed Shannon would be worth your while, Ennis would be ok if you are just looking for a bit of a knockabout. Woodstock probabaly would be a better option but neither are memorable tbh.

If you're coming to the down to play a couple of courses in the area I'd recommend Dromoland, Shannon & Woodstock in that order.

I'm a member in Woodstock so would recommend the place. Was out today for 13 holes and it's in good nick given the recent weather. I really like Shannon and don't particularly like Ennis. Dromoland is a lovely track. Of course Lahinch is just half an hour away!

Am a member of Ennis and would be interested in what you found wrong with the course. Greens can be poor at times but that is mainly due to the numbers of people who play the course (over 1200 members) during the year. They just dont get a rest unlike Woodstock which is a "GhostCourse" most of the time during the week. Also the course is a bit open and allows poor drivers of a ball to get away with a lot which is good for me :D:D

IMO and i have played 38 of top 100 courses in Ireland, Ennis has 3 of the toughest par 4's a person can play. 6,12 & 14 off back tee's are all over 465 yards with severe greens.

Hey, I only took up golf in September, but I would say Dromoland, Shannon, Woodstock and Ennis in that order. I think Dromoland are doing good deals for weekdays - €55 for a round and a steak dinner afterwards. Also a few holes in Shannon and all holes in Ennis use temporary greens at this time of year

shannon is a great test...ennis waayyy to easy and a bit of a dirt track, some awful mickey mouse holes..would really recommend dromoland if you want a good test at a pretty good rate....but if ur looking for a confidence builder ennis is your spot...if u cant beat ur handicap there, there is something wrong....
woodstock is ok too but is always flooded after any amount of rain..

Dromoland is not a good test of golf. It is scenic and pretty but easy. It has three par fours that are driveable and I have been on all of them 9, 10 and 15.
Par fives that if you get a decent drive away are reachable with a 6 iron. The second hole has been diminished because of the netting they have put up to protect houses. Couple of decent holes as well though but overall not a good test of golf. It is no adare manorbut can charge the same green fees at time.

Think ennis has Three great par fours but has a few silly holes but is okay.
Woodstock is open but I didn't like it. Had a farmers field to it.

Shannon is a good test of golf

i agree 9 and 10 are driveable but they are risk/reward golf holes...if you do go straight at the green and dont get there your lookin at a bogey at best.and the 4th hole is the only easy par five, should really be a par 4...
and unless you can drive the ball 350 your not gettin anywhere any of the other par fives with a 6 iron....
the last three holes are a 440 yard par four, a 200 hunferd yard par 3 over water and a par 5 which is a seriously tight driving hole and then a freen with water at the front and all around one side of it...try playin them in the wind...
i have nothing to do with the place but she is no easy golf course bar the 4th and 15th holes, maybe the 9/10th as well if you a good driver of the ball

Dromoland was a cracking course about 10 years ago.
The second was a nice par 5. It's a mess now. The netting stretches for ages down the fairway and makes a mockery of the course. To get back the shot they turned the difficult par 4 fourth into a mickey mouse par 5, not one single feature on that hole.
6/9/10/12/15 are all handy while 14/16/17 are pretty difficult.

In my view Shannon is the best layout. Nothing overly simple. I even remember it when the club house was down at the (now) second green. The only issue I would have with Shannon is (like dromoland) allowing other interests take over the course in places. The 11th (old ninth) in Shannon was a class par 4 and index 2 but now it's a joke with poeple more concerned about the car park than the golf course, so like dromolands second, it's a hole you just want to get past and continue, whereas in the old days those 2 holes were in the top couple of holes on the course.

    Yours in my 2 cent,
    GSH.
