Small Petrol vs Large Diesel

Have the 320D up for sale at the moment, looking for a change. After 6 BMW's (318is, 316i, 320i, 520i, 735i, 320d) am thinking of changing over to a Mercedes, with what I'll get for the 320d (~3.5k) it'll be a W210 E-Class that has my eye. Have seen two that I quite fancy, a 01 E200k and a 02 E320CDI, both with sub 100k miles, both with service history, warranty and NCT. Both Avantagrde autos with all the toys also.

Question is, with the miles I do, which would be the better buy? Doing about 600 miles a week all motorway driving. My question to you guys is will the savings in fuel from the diesel offset the higher tax. Have read some of the theads here on the 200K and was surprised by thje decent MPG, hence the thread! Is there much difference in upkeep on the more complex CDI vs the Petrol from experience? Aware of the various corrosion issues etc, and to be honest at that price I would expect to put a bit of money in if needs be.

Insurance wise only paying about 400 on the BMW, the 200K would be about 40 more, the 320CDI about 70 more so no issue there.

Would love to hear feedback from any of you that drive either!

Moved job so instead of commuting on the train and floating around in the Panzerwagen at the weekends its fading the white line day in day out. And 18Mpg isn't quite what you would want for that! The 3 series is quite a step down in terms of comfort levels (it too is orient blue with cream leather though), trying to get something more akin to the 7'er hence the 320CDi catching my eye!

There is a car running cost calculator that someone on boards.ie made. It's pretty handy for guestimating things like this.

    I'll try find it.

But the difference of a few 100 euro extra in tax could be worth driving around in the more comfortable Merc. Is the 320 Merc automatic?

Thanks for that, I'll have a look.

Both automatic. Want to go back to an auto, don't mind sacraficing a point or two in MPG. Especially with MB. A manual E-Class just doesn't seem "right".
