Hi All,the head on the 35x cracked with the frost.I got a second hand one and put it all back together.I was just wondering whats the best way to find TDC and which valves to set and when?
From research the gap is 0.012 when cold and and i should start at Cylinder 1 Radiator end but just not sure of the exact method.
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

    Right,

Now if anyone feels im wrong here feel free to contradict, but the following would be my way of doing it.

The sequence for each cyclinder firing for a three cyclinder engine would be 1-2-3, going on this basis you will want:

cyclinder 1 to be at TDC exh/inlet stroke-to identify when it is in this position you should turn the engine and keep an eye on the rocker shaft at cyclinder 1. Watch when the rocker presses on exhaust valve, it then lets it up as you turn the engine, then presses on inlet valve, stop. You now have cyclinder 1 at TDC Exh/inlet.

At this stage you can now adjust valves for cyclinders no. 2 & 3 as the valves for these cyclinders are now definately shut.

Turn the engine until either cyclinder 2 or 3 are "rocking" and then adjust no.1

Your tappets should now be adjusted.

This is my understanding of how to do it, hope this is of help.

I was going to reply to this when I noticed it was a 3cyl so wasn't sure how it was done.

I don't think your way of doing it is right, cyl 2 or 3 may have a valve slightly pressed when 1 is at TDC.

If it was me I would personally do it by by watching the valves on 1 cyl at a time. When the exhaust valve is half way down it's companion valve should be fully closed and vice versa.

maybe your right but thats why i said make sure cyclinder 1 was at TDC Exh/inlet stroke, because then cyclinder 2 would be on power stroke and cyclinder 3 would be on compression stroke. if this is the case the valves should be fully shut.

Thanks for the input lads, this is wrecking my head now.I've tried every way possible now its like trying to crack a safe.I found this on the interwebs

    http://www.thenuffieldandleylandtractorclub.co.uk/wp/wp-content/themes/nuffield/images/Valve%20Clearances.PDF

now I'm pretty sure its the same or close to engine.I have smoke coming out the exhaust and Diesel out of the injectors but when it turns over it just wont make a kick to start,a mechanic friend told me if the tappets are close enough it should at least start and then you can do final adjustments later.
I've found tdc mark in the inspection hole in the flywheel, just to be sure cylinder number one is the radiator end or front end?
Sorry if there silly questions but want to try and get it started myself before calling in the cavalry.redface.gif

Cyl one is the engine furthest from from the gearbox

Easy way to do it is one Cyl at the time if you are not used to it is to
watch no 1 Cyl until first valve opens fully slowly turn the engine with socket on crankshaft nut until valve spring is is fully depressed ie it is just ready to start on it's way up again, then you can set the other valve on that cyl as
it will be loose and can be rocked up and down when you have that tappet
adjusted and tightened you then turn the engine again until the valve you have just set is fully depressed then you can set the first valve that is number 1 cys finished then proceed to number 2 and repeat the procedure
    and so on.
I know these engines very well as I was a Fitter with Bord Na Mona for many
years and I have rebuilt thousands of thoes engines

pm me on monday and ill fax you the perkins origional manual set up .....

to answer your op put a needle gauge on the block, arm over piston, androck engine. this gives you true tdc.
