Wireless doesn't seem to be working

I can't seem to connect to my UPC wireless router. My housemate's laptop works fine with it. If I connect to it directly with an ethernet cable the connection is perfect. My laptop (Sony Vaio) can see the wireless connection and even connects to it. However after this the internet speed is incredibly slow (if it even works at all).

Any advice on what might be the problem?

Send both laptops to http://www.speedtest.net/ while they are connected. If you come back with the same results you may have rouge third party software that is hogging your internet connection. Do the usual scans, if all else fails i would back up your stuff and do a clean windows 7 install.
