Started listening to Ash after forgetting about the for a few years. Just bought the A-Z album vol 1 for a nostalgic trip but was blown away with how fresh they still sound and the melodies are brilliant. Just got vol 2 and it just as good and cant stop playing it. Shame they not given the same attention as some of bigger bands with less talent.

Haven't listened to all their new stuff but i think binary is a class song. I'll get around to listening to the rest. They make great pop rock (for lack of a better word) but i don't like their harder songs at all.

Ash's A-Z Series is the best thing they've done in years - seriously good pop/rock tunes. Unfortunately didn't get much airplay despite the high quality. Good idea for distribution also. Read about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A%E2%80%93Z_Series

    Ash - Binary

Ash - Return Of White Rabbit

    Ash - Joy Kicks Darkness

    Ash - Arcadia

    Ash - Neon

Arcadia is an amazing song, Ash certainly still have it definitely. They are amazing life, they put so much energy into their gigs and really know how to get the crowd going.

Its a pity the A-Z didn't get more media attention, But in my opinion, perhaps the problem was the whole 26 singles thing, they spread themselves far too thin, and instead of the way a band usually puts out a few singles and tries to get them as much airtime as possible, with Ash it was a case that every 2wks there was a new song out, and the odds where you would not hear that song again on the radio or wherever.

I think they got more publicity from the unusual format of this album, instead of the good songs that were on it, in particular the better songs such as white rabbit, Arcadia etc, which is a shame.

That's the problem with Ash though, they are a great pop-rock band who wish they were an alt-rock or a hard-rock band. That and the fact that Wheeler is a weak vocalist.

I concur with the comment on Wheeler - appalling vocalist, particularly live

    Great band though

Would agree he hasnt the best vocals, but neither did Ian Brown of Stone Roses and they are considered one of the best English bands ever, but again they like Ash have the songs to overcome there downfalls.

I think that's kinda harsh. He's not a very strong singer but he's as good live as recorded. I've seen Ash a few times and have thought they were great every time.
I remember they were in a list of the top 50 bands to see live, think it was in uncut or mojo.

Seen that somewhere to. Never seen them live, just missed the in Oxygen last year but they were on last and was in bits by then, heard it was class.

yeah the comments about Wheeler's voice are a tad harsh. it's always been clear that he hasn't been the strongest of singers but sometimes that slight imperfection and frailty becomes a signature appeal almost...there's been many singers like that in the past as mentioned above and quite you'd easily take a bit of character over perfection

Just back from seeing them live, amazing gig! Got my copy of Trailer signed too, which was nice!

Thought The Dead Disciples was one of the best of the 26.

Some great stuff in the extra songs they sent out too though - especially Gallows Hill, Pirates are so 2004, Midnight Militia.. great b-sides!

i know its been said many times before, but they have to be one of the most underrated bands ever. their new stuff is just as good as their older stuff, the a-z's are excellent, such variety in them which is what they wanted.my favs from the a-z would be neon, arcadia, binary, war with me, pripyat, instinct, insects, physical world, embers. but its all good
How many bands nowadays can throw in decent solos, and by decent i mean decent, apart from ash and the manics.there are more bands i know but cant think of any at the mo.maybe weezer but they lost it somewhat i think.
i think wheelers voice suits the music they make, granted its not a traditional rock sort of voice, but its flows nicely with his tunes.charlotte complimented his voice nicely when she was around.
iv seen them 4 times only so far, and every time was excellent.their definitely not as big as before, i went to see them in the opera house in cork a few months back, was up at the front having the time of my life, thought the whole place was jamming, looked behind me in the crowd and a lot of people seemed to have disappeared or left. i thought to myself, wtf
im somewhat of a huge fan myself, i really dont understand why there not bigger.it pisses me off actually, but i suppose everyone is different and it would be a boring world if everyone was like me.

Agreed they're excellent, but I still hope they go back to the album format because it really suited them - Free All Angels, Meltdown, Twilight of the Innocents were all outstanding, and very different albums.

i dont know, the a-z were considered to be successful, twilight was a commercial flop as afar i know.their second single from that album Polaris is an epic tune and it flopped big time, and meltdown didnt hit the heights that it should of, even though it was another great album and a lot of promotion went into it, to be honest i cant see them releasing an album than would have mass appealing tunes such as shining light, burn baby burn or sometimes again.
next year theres another 'best of' coming out.and that will lead them into 2012.cant wait
