3 Best Attributes for a Gaelic Football Player

I'm looking for peoples opinions on the 3 best attributes you could place on a gaelic footballer in their position.

Positions are just backs, midfield or forwards, not the specific areas of each zone.

For example for a forward, maybe something like "Taking chances" or "Fielding" for a midfielder or "man marking" for a back.

We are looking at grading our players and need ideas how to do it so a broad spectrum for a fair format like this might help.

    Defender:

Tackling / Man Marking / Strength

    Midfield:
    Engine / fielding / Passing

    Forward:
    Finishing / Speed / Link-play

To be fair any of these could be used for any position given the way modern football is played.

Defender - 1.Ability to prevent opponent winning possession 2. ability to prevent opponent from performing a constructive move when they are in possession 3. Ability to Dispossess Opponent

Midfielder - 1. Mobility around the pitch 2. Ability to link Forwards and Back 3. ability to compete for Kickouts

Forward - 1. Ability to gain Possession 2. ability to score 3. ability to create scoring opportunities for others

    Backs
Intelligence - Not only to be able to read the game, but know where his man opponent will go, where the ball will go and where his team mates are.
Physical Presence - Not only to be physically fast & fit but to be able to intimidate opponents either by their "engine" or height.
Composure - Not to panic when they ball is coming to them or when they have the ball

    Midfield
Fitness - have to cover from 21 to 21
Height & Handling - as main possession gainer have to be able to gain possession :)
Passing - Both kicking & hand

    Forwards
Speed - need explosive speed to get away from opponent.
Kicking - have to be able to score, kicking is how this happens.
Strength - Physical & Mental, not only be able to cope with defender taking skelps off you but also be able to put past mistakes behind you.

I think you could have far more than 3 for each line and you could have a different 3 for every position on the pitch.

As a former back myself I cannot believe that although most have included 'speed' for a forward nobody has included it for a back.

There's nothing more frustrating than watching one of your defenders who's slow marking a fast forward. You just know he's going to get skinned every time.

IMO No slow player should be allowed play in the backs.

A good back can compensate for their lack of speed by good positioning, always staying goal side and also you need a lot more speed to get away/around someone than to mark someone. But you are right, wing backs need to be as fast as their opponents, but full backs not necessarily so. You could have 20 different criteria for each line and still leave stuff out :(

    I disagree.

You have it the wrong way around - you need to be faster to mark someone than to get away from them. The reason being the forward is the one making the first move, the back is reacting to them, so the forward has a half-second head start which is enough to win a reasonably well-placed pass.

And I know you'll talk about reading the game but there's only so much compensating you can do. You can get away with it to a certain extent at club level, but I don't know how many slow backs I've seen exposed over the years once the ground hardens or once they mark a very good player.

Agreed, look at Denis Irwin in soccer. Different game i know but towards the end of his career, he had no speed but amazing positioning. Had players that could do a 200 metre race in half the time he could yet they couldnt get past him. Positioning and good timing on tackles can easily make up for lack of speed.

A back can compensate for lack of speed, but still needs speed in some form, different positions need different types of speed :)

What types of speed are there?

Good question, guess I didn't think/explain that one through :)

Full forward line would need to be very quick off the mark and be able to change direction very quickly.
Half forwards would need to be quick over a long length to cover between 65 & 21.
Midfielders would need to be quicker over longer length (whole pitch) to be able to support backs and forwards within very short periods of time.
Backs would need to be quick to cover their opponents while also be quick to make a decision as to what to do next (stay with man, go for ball etc.)
