Hey, so I remember being told in first year by a lecturer that when you sit an exam paper and you leave before the full duration of the exam (so like before the last 30 mins) that it is recorded on your exam script what time you left at. Then this is taken in to consideration in the event that you fail by a very marginal %. So say you get 37% and you left 40mins before exam ended, the examiner who decides your final grade would supposedly take this in to consideration when deciding whether or not to bump you up to a pass. Conversely if you stayed for the entire duration until pens down, the examiner would be more likely to bump you up to a pass.

It sounds ridiculous and unfair imo but I remember clearly my lecturer telling our class this. Since then I have always just sat there for the whole thing even if I was finished early coz of this. So anyone know if this is total bull**** or is this actually the case?

    Cheers

Never heard of this and I doubt its an official procedure as such, but if they do record the time you left at (for whatever reason) - it may subconciously influence the examiner in someway.

Examiners are people too and in my opinion its natural to subconsciously form an opinion of the person whose paper they are correcting and this may or may not affect how favourably they mark your paper (depending on your examiner)

If you received a sloppy written paper denoting the student left 40mins early, it paints a bad picture for you as if you werent really arsed so I doubt they'd be inclined to do you a favour as such.

Whereas if its a neatly written paper, and you stayed for the whole duration and its eveident you at least tried, they might think you just had a bad day or got unlucky with the questions and are more likely to bump you up 1 or 2 % if it means a pass.

Interesting though never heard of it. Sounds kind of like the leaving cert where they write the time on your answer sheet if you go to the toilet. I had a guy beside me today that turned up 25mins late and was still allowed to sit the exam. There was an orange sheet stating this person was absent placed on his desk but was then removed after he sat down. I was amazed he was even allowed inside the the hall. DCU really should have a rulebook for exams.

    You mean the regulations here?

Of note in this case is section 4.3
No candidate will be admitted to the Examination Hall more than one hour after the start of the examination. In exceptional circumstances, however, and provided that no other candidate has withdrawn and left the examination room, a candidate may be admitted later, at the discretion of the Senior Invigilator. Extra time will not normally be allowed.

I know a few people who've been let in half an hour or more late.
That's the reason you can't leave before an hour is up, to ensure that people who are late can still get in without it being possible to leave early and give them the questions/answers.

    Fair play for that.

I dont agree with anyone being allowed into an exam after it has started mind. Any professional exams I have ever done have always carried such a rule.

I know, I remember hearing a story once about how a student was travelling from Lucan for an exam and his car broke down on the way. He had to leave it behind, got a taxi to DCU and was let in to sit his exam 40 minutes in. Quite personally I was sick to my stomach I really was!

And whats with these "toilet breaks". I mean if ya can't relieve yourself before the exam you really shouldn't be allowing relieve yourself during!

Seriously, wait until you get into the real world and see how things are.

Most professional institutions do not allow it, sop story or not.

It is the norm to be honest - no longer in school I am afraid.

I've always arrived at the exam hall late just to avoid the rabble outside. Its amazing the difference it makes as you go straight from a quiet study area to a quiet exam hall.

I'm sure strict "professional" institutions do not tolerate it but in the case of a 3rd level institution I really don't think it is too much of a hindrance on anyone. At the end of the day it's not like people who are late for exams are just strolling in at their own leisure. They have obviously either ****ed up by sleeping late, or have had some sort of incident which affected them getting to the exam hall on time. Either way, they deserve to at least have the chance to sit as much of the exam as their time left permits (assuming they are not absurdly late like >90 mins).

have to say this happened to me in DCU in 1991. Wildcat Bus/DART strike. I was going to be 2 hours early for the exam ended up 30 mins late.

I did ring ahead though and I wasn't the only one late. If anyone had left though we wouldn't have been allowed in.

Not with the lad who brought me to the toilet this year. Normally I expect them to wait outside, the dirty fecker comes in with me and points at the urinal. He then stares at me until urination is complete. Was scared to go into the cubical incase he followed me in there too!

In all fairness, some people have a weak bladder - if they arnt allowed go to the toilet. They will end up having an accident in the in the exams......... eh hem.

I seen one lad in one of the exams who had earbuds in. A good idea as their was several distractions during it. Great idea for the SU actually - they always give out free condoms on Shag Week. Maybe free earbuds on exam week!!!!

Should have asked him to shake it for ya when you finished :pac:

Seriously, thats bordering on being in police custody.

I would have told him to fcuk off and if he didnt then I just would have locked myself in the cubicle.

jesus, that would be off putting! i'm wary of most people who go to the toilet anyway,i reckon a large enough percentage are shnakin off for a read of some notes.

Probably BS. Your instructor told you that so you wouldn't run out the instant you got a chance.

I was told in secondary school that it was to see if people who stay for the whole time perform better. I doubt anyone would give you extra points for sitting there for the whole time.

Lecturers can use any reason they want not to bring your grade up. Mine was brought up in first year from 38% while another person who got the same result wasn't, she was told that she didn't deserve it :(
