Timing Valve - BMW 320 - 2005

Being told that timing valve in car is stretched and that its going to be a big job to fix. Car has 60K miles and 2005 reg. Never had issue with car. Driving home on Monday hit a big pot hole quite heavy. 2 mins later and car knocked itself out. Tried restarting but no luck. Brought to garage. Informed me on the timing valve issue. Can this be caused by the impact of the pot hole and if so could the repair expense be reclaimed through insurance?

Also is it normal for car to have timing valve go at this stage. Car has been serviced every year.

I assume you mean timing chain?

@OP I believe the E46 320 has a timing chain, so I seriously doubt it's "stretched" at 60k miles. In fact the chain will probably outlast the engine!

If you hit a pothole (hard) it is possible that you trigger the fuel-cut off switch on the car. This is a safety feature that if you crash the car, the fuel will be cut-off to the engine. Not sure, but a stretched chain and hitting a pothole wouldn't be related.

I'd check with another garage / mechanic.

Thanks for the advice. yeah its a strange one alright. I had the timing belt replaced last year when I got serviced. Maybe they installed it incorrectly.

But your right. Will get a second opinion.

They have a chain not a belt - if someone charged you to replace the belt, youve been done.

There's something wrong here - are you sure there was a belt changed last time? If there was, it was an auxiliary belt (also referred to as fanbelt), not a timing belt. Even a chain being changed at that mileage is unlikely.

There's something seriously up here. I take it the car is not running, so will need to be towed to get a second option.

Check your invoices for what you were charged for last year. Also confirm that the "timing valve" needs replacement.

The timing chain on these don't give trouble. Did he say the "valve timing" was off?

Either way I'd be very suspect...

did he say the timing chain ? if so they can stretch and can cost from 600 + euro's to fix. or did he say the variable valve timing system ? which can also go in bmw's and these VANOS significantly enhances emission management, increases output and torque.
