US Utah 'biological' army base 'locked down'

A US military base that carries out tests to protect troops against biological attacks was locked down on Wednesday to resolve a "serious concern", officials have said.
The base in Dugway, Utah, reopened early Thursday to allow staff in and out. There were reported to be 1,200 to 1,400 people inside Dugway at the time.
Base commander Col William King said on Wednesday no-one was in danger.
No information was given on the nature of the problem.
The primary mission for the base, which is located about 85 miles (135km) south-west of Salt Lake City, is defending troops against biological and chemical attacks.
"Measures like these are not taken lightly. No-one is in immediate danger, but these steps are required," Col King said.

    Mystery emergency triggers Dugway lockdown

An overnight lockdown at the sprawling, 801,000-acre Dugway Proving Ground was lifted early Thursday morning.
Officials at the remote Army installation, 90 miles southwest of Salt Lake City in Utah’s western desert, remained tight-lipped about why they ordered gates closed at 5:24 p.m. Wednesday. Up to 1,500 employees of Dugway reportedly were forced to stay the night.
Dugway would not detail reasons for the shutdown, but did stress that no damages or injuries were reported, and no threats received. The installation does house small amounts of chemical and biological warfare agents for defense testing purposes, and Dugway also is a prime Army base for testing of an array of conventional military weaponry and ammunition.
Asked specifically Thursday if a chemical or biological leak or spill may have prompted the lockdown, Dugway public affairs specialist Bonnie Robinson said she could neither confirm nor deny that scenario.
“I cannot talk about that,” she said, giving the same reply when asked if public safety was ever a concern. She said Dugway officials tentatively planned to either hold a news conference or release an updated statement early Thursday afternoon.
Dugway also serves as a training site for Army Special Forces and Reserve and National Guard units and encompasses expansive swatches of wastelands used for bombing and tactics training by fighter jets based at Hill Air Force Base.
By 4:30 a.m. Thursday, normal traffic in and out of Dugway had resumed. “We have employees reporting for work,” Robinson confirmed, but she would not answer further questions.

The Dugway sheep incident, also known as the Skull Valley sheep kill, was a 1968 sheep kill that has been connected to United States Army chemical and biological warfare programs at Dugway Proving Ground in Utah. Six thousand sheep were killed on ranches near the base, and the popular explanation blamed Army testing of chemical weapons for the incident, though alternative explanations have been offered. A report, commissioned by Air Force Press Officer Jesse Stay first made public in 1998 was called the "first documented admission" from the Army that a nerve agent killed the sheep at Skull Valley.

This reminds me of the line from the film Broken Arrow: "I don't know what's scarier, losing nuclear weapons, or that it happens so often there's actually a term for it."

I'd say this happens all the time and this just happens to be one we hear about. Here's an article that was posted 27 mins ago:

    From http://www.bostonherald.com/news/national/west/view/20110127utah_army_post_reopens_after_nerve_agent_found/srvc=home&position=recent
SALT LAKE CITY — The Army says Dugway Proving Ground, where military weapons are tested, was locked down for hours because a small amount of a nerve agent was unaccounted for.

The military said in a statement Thursday the amount missing was less than one fourth of a teaspoon of VX nerve agent, which affects the body’s ability to carry messages through the nerves.

The missing vial prompted a lockdown late Wednesday afternoon that lasted until the agent was found early Thursday.

The Army says no one was in danger and the lockdown was ordered as a precaution. Between 1,200 and 1,400 people were inside the facility at the time.

Dugway is about 85 miles southwest of Salt Lake City.

one fourth of a teaspoon of VX nerve agent

That is enough to kill several people though. I have no idea but is the composition of the nerve agent secret? And can it be reverse engineered?

Another point is that there is WMD in the US. Regime change.

Well according to wikipedia C11H26NO2PS is the forumla for it. I think if it was stolen, it'd be more of a case of using it as is. My science knowledge is fairly basic, but my movie knowledge is quite good and according to "The Rock", if that amount of gas was released in the atmosphere (by chemtrail, for example), it could kill several thousand people. And movies never lie!

We'll get some lads from the military forum to help us invade liberate the oil people.
