How TV Ruined Your Life

I remember someone mentioning this before, but couldn't find a thread on it. It's Charlie Broker's new 6 part show on BBC 2. The first episode was on last night, about how TV shows use fear.

It was pretty good. It was pretty much Screenwipe but focusing on a single subject. It's quite interesting too, especially how Steve Guttenburg saved the world.

    Anyone else see it?

Sky Plus won't help you record BBC4 - you can view it but it's in the other channels section and can't be recorded, paused, etc.

Oh right, I don't have Sky anyway, I have NTL, I meant their version. I just saw the episode there, pretty good, glad to see the old Screenwipe format back.

    This is the kind of thing Charlie Brooker does best, much better than 'the 11oclock show' or 'you have been watching;

It's similar territory to screenwipe, but it's very well put together.

Interesting topic, well researched, knowledgeable presenter.

Apparently the rest of the series is very well reviewed too, looking forward to it.

Forgot to say that this was on tonight. Last weeks episode was total sh*te compared to tonights. This is Broker back to purely Screenwipe territory. It was f*cking hilarious and he was as vicious as ever.

I don't like the name of it.

I was in tears laughing at some parts of this. The bit about a horse ****ting a wheelbarrow and the makeover woman talking about her teeth were priceless.

"It just doesn't look like my teeth!" "That's cause it's not your ****ing teeth."

Well if you've got Sky, you can access the other channels where you get BBC 3 and 4, but you have to tune it to those channels first. Plus yeah, it's repeated on BBC4.

Charlie and the production company allow people to upload his BBC shows to YouTube, so you can usually find them on there the following day. Their position is that so long as the shows aren't released on DVD they're not losing any money from it, and being available on YouTube gains him fans. He even did a joke about people watching his shows on YouTube in an episode of Screenwipe once.

His Channel 4 stuff is under a different contract so he can't give permission for that to be uploaded, but that's not such a big deal here as we can use 4od. Plus, his BBC shows are superior.

Missed part one so canna comment but this weeks was as entertaining as Screenwipe. As I posted elsewhere - is anyone else annoyed that Charlie Brooker lives inside your head, steals your thoughts and then takes all the credit.

You have to admire Charlie Brooker and the production company for allowing the uploading of their videos to YouTube. And this has pulled off as the fantastic clip of "How to Report the News" has become the top rated video on that site
The clip, titled How To Report The News - a parody of news reporting clichés from last week's episode of BBC4 show Newswipe - has gained almost 750,000 views since it was posted on January 27, and surged to the number one position on YouTube's Top Rated of all time list, with over 7,400 giving it a rating.

The clip isn't from an official BBC YouTube channel - and now that it's gained such attention, the user who uploaded it, PrivateCustard, has written: 'Now I feel I must add the obligitory copyright notices in the hope that the BBC don't make me take it down (pleeeease BBC, let it stay, Mr Brooker would want it to!)'

In fairness, the BBC has previously seemed happy for Brooker's shows to appear in unauthorised version on YouTube - the entirety of Newswipe's companion series, Screen Wipe, is available on the site.

Brooker's previous claim to international fame was when a joke about George Bush in his Guardian TV column Screen Burn was misinterpreted by US right-wingers as a genuine call for the president to be assassinated, leading to a flood of hate mail and the Guardian pulling the column from their site.

Kevin Eldon is easily the best thing about this show.

Basicly that was Adam Curtis "The Century Of Self" in 30 mins rather than 4 hours. I feel like killing myself.

(I spotted quite a bit of it was recycled from Screenwipe but with added dispair)

Can we have a discussion over this, because Charlie Brooker and his production company have given permission to these videos being uploaded to YouTube, so technically it isn't copyright infringement?

The 'Aspiration' episode on Wednesday was sublime.

Brooker might possibly have summed up the last fifty years of consumerism in a mere thirty minutes.

    Genius. And bloody funny.

Ahhh, but didn't he reuse one of his jokes when talking about My Super Sweet 16, stating that it was probably used as an Al Qaeda recruitment video? But all in all, it was still a great episode.

Next week's episode is going to talk about love.

Oh dear. And just after Valentine's too. I expect nothing less than crushing nihilism. :pac:

last nights Love episode was brilliant. However, highly dangerous to watch while sittng next to the love of your life.

Yes darling, I know I laughed when he made that joke about long term relationships sucking out your optimism and faith in humanity, but that was only laughing at other people, us, we're different.

Yay, watching the Love one now :)

Just watched the Love episode there, was brilliant. He certainly hit the nail on the head concerning real life messy breakups and how they make you feel:(

    Mwahahaha! It was bloody fantastic.

He is, however, married to the delicious Konnie Huq.

So I'd imagine she, ahem, soothes that furrowed brow? :pac:
