hey guys, bit of a problem with my desire.
it's showing 14mb left of phone memory, but I haven't that much saved on it,most of my apps are on The memory card.

did a search and cache cleaners were recommended, which got me from 3mbs to 14, but still I should have more. any ideas what to do and get rid of that memory low sign hovering over me?

Bumping as I am interested too. Not out of memory yet but going that way even though I don't have a lot installed.

To properly fix you have to install custom rom and partition your sdcard. Get a technical mate to help.

Should I have to do this. Last week I had ~80Mb free. Between last week and this I installed a couple of apps, removed them again and even removed some other apps too. Now my free space is 50Mb. I have cleared cache etc but it did not make much difference. Where is this memory disappearing to?
By partitioning the SD card I would really be just ignoring the underlying problem and just throwing memory at it.

Depends on what apps you updated.

If they were the included apps like Twitter/Facebook/Maps/Mail,Flash, the updates to these will install to the internal data partition (taking away from your free space without installing a new app) as the system partition can't be updated with re-flashing.

I had adobe flash player on mine which i only ever used once as the file i downloaded was a pdf so i just deleted it and went from 27mb to 42mb, which was odd as the app itself was only coming up as 10.7mb and it was stored on the SD card so i can only assume that adobe was on the sd card and the pdf file was then stored on the internal memory

The Desire has a huge design flaw and that's internal memory. From my experience I spent more time battling internal memory problems than any other thing I did on the phone when I had it, and there simply isn't a an easy fix. It's either use very few apps or root your phone and install a ROM that puts the apps on the SD card.

I don't know much about memory but the system version of moving apps to the sd card only moves a portion of them to the sd card so even though you're installing apps on the sd card they are quickly using up internal storage space. That's why installing a ROM with a partitioned sd card and A2SD+ or some inequivalent is useful. Partitioning your card literally means to partition it into two storage parts. Take a 4gb card as an example, completing the process of installing a rom using beginners instructions will lead you to partitioning the card, say it into 1 x 1gb part and 1 x 3gb card. (1+3=4gb) for example. The A2SD+ feature of the ROM fools the phone into thinking that the 1gb partition is part of the phones internal memory. So now your internal memory will total roughly 1.15gb instead of 0.15gb and your sd card memory is 3gb instead of 4gb. So you can leave all your apps on the internal memory!

I'm not a wizard and I managed it, you also get to upgrade to gingerbread too. BTW HTC confirmed this week that the Desire will not be getting gingerbread update as a stock HTC ROM due to a lack of internal memory! They can hardly format people's sd cards and partition them via an over the airwaves update.

Have a look at XDA developers (nerds who all come together with ROM builds) under the desire section to see if you want to root. There are loads of roms and step by step instructions for beginners on how to backup, root, and install a ROM. I ended up trying loads of the them because once you root and get used to backing up and restoring, it's easy to try new roms. I found that ROM's from a fella called LeeDroid were always as stable as the stock HTC rom's so I'd recommend his final version of a the gingerbread desire rom here.

The process is 1. backup your stuff, 2. download your phones stock HTC rom in case you want to reinstall it and unroot (reinstalling your stock HTC rom will automatically unroot your phone and bring you back to the Froyo you have installed now - you can get it on XDA, it's a complete one stop shop) , 3. root, 4. S-Off (some kind of security-off thing, I didn't understand it I just followed the instructions!), 5. Partition (I used gparted cos with rom-manager you can only partition a max of 512mb, I wanted 1gb, 6. Nandroid backup, it's a backup of your new ROM, 7. Flash your new rom, basically that's installing the new rom - I'd recommend the one above from LeeDroid.

Here's a link to the noob guide which has step by step video guides for all of the above.

    Here's the Desire development section

Best of luck if you try it.

BTW - after you flash (install) your rom, the first boot up can take up to 15 mins while the screen looks frozen, don't panic, it's normal.
