COMPATIBILITY OF NIKON LENSES WITH NEW DIGITAL CAMERAS

    Hi there,

My first post on boards.ie. Just wondering if anyone could tell me if the two lenses I've got which have Autofocus on them andwhich work fine with my old Nikon F55 are compatible with the newer Digital Nikon cameras?

Both the lenses are Nikon AF. One is 28 - 80mm and the second 70 - 300mm. If I was able to get a new digital body and keep the lenses I could save myself a lot of money but I'm getting contradictory answers from diffferent people.

    Thanks

They wont focus on bodies such as the D40/D40x/D60 and I think they wont with the new D3000 and D5000 bodies to my knowledge. I'm not fully up to scratch with the new Nikon entry level line up. It will work with the likes of the Nikon D50, D70, D70s, D200, D100 (which is quite old now), D90, D300, D300s and a few more (not fully up to scratch with their line up).

All you need to know is if the body has a built in Autofocus motor as the lower end cheaper Nikons don't have this and rely on the motor being in the lens itself (Nikon calls these lenses AF-S) lenses.

Good compatibility chart here from nikonians...

    http://www.nikonians.org/nikon/slr-lens.html

You want to match up on the camera name on the LHS with the AF or AF-D columns. It's essentially more or less what Pete says above.
On most cameras except for the D3* and D700 they'll also give you a smaller FOV than you're used to on your F55, effectively multiplying the focal length of the lens by 1.5 by way of comparison with the 35mm frame size.

    +D7000.

    Wow, that was fast guys!!

Very useful information, especially the Nikonians website list which is SO authoritative and comprehensive.

It might be worth my while buying a second hand digital Nikon body as some of them are pretty old already and might be there at a good price, using the list as my guide.

I'm interested in using it on a telescope I bought recently. The advantage of digital, of course, is that you can see your results immediately, but with this film F55, you can't. I might be interested in taking up photography as well and the digital body would kill two birds with one stone. That said I have a Fuji Finepix F11 Digital Camera. A guy at Astronomy Ireland said there's an adapter I could get for it and is sending me out an info pack about what they sell.

I find this Fuji F11 VERY awkward to link up with my computer and so don't relish the thought of linking it up to the telescope ... That's another matter. I'd be surprised if you genii didn't know something about all of this too.

    Thanks lads!
