I did search the forum, but only found one thread, with no suggestions.

We are heading to the lovely Heritage Hotel in Portlaoise this weekend and would like some suggestions for nice scenic walks or historical sites that we could go visit one afternoon. We have a car but are also close to the train station.

    All suggestions gratefully received!

There are some woods on the far side of Stradbally from Portlaoise (Windy Gap) that my Portlaoise colleagues tell me are good for walking or running. The tourist attractions in Portlaoise could kindly be described as "low-key" but the Heritage is a great hotel, so relax and enjoy!

I live in Portlaoise. You should head towards the Sliebh bloom mountains and there is a park there called glen barrow. If u wanna pm me I'll give u directions. its fab-has the most unusual terrain. Flat stone all over the place and you can sit on it at the side of the river and have a picnic. There's waterfalls in it too.
