Can't see a thread on this so here goes.

Eamon O'Cuiv was announced as having come second in the FF leadership contest.
    Is anyone surprised at this.
He's a third generation member of the DeValera family, being the grandson of DeV.
In the media he comes across to me as a bit of a buffoon, a country bumpkin. Recently he was recorded as saying that pretty much all that was left to us (in relation to economic state) was to pray!

He has been undistinguished in the ministries he has held.

What sort of a leader would he have made of FF. What sort of image would he have portrayed of Ireland abroad if he'd been a Taoiseach in the future.

What sort of message were the FF TD's sending to their party and the electorate by giving him second place behind M Martin.

I reckon he was an inoffensive default choice for FFers who don't support Martin, think Lenihan is too badly damaged to be leader and who dislike Hanafin. Those in my view were the main deciding factors in the contest.

I've always thought that O'Cuiv was one of the FF cabbages, I can only think he got to cabinet office because of his family lineage or by being a buddy of bertie.

I dunno if anyone saw him on Vincent Brownes show last night but he was a disgrace. He continually gave disingenuous non-apologies about what FF has done. Then to make matters worse he sat their grinning like a fool and kept saying to VB, "If you say we're to blame, then we're to blame, you know everything"

The other panellists were right when they said that FF just don't understand why people are so angry and until they figure it out they won't find redemption.

    I agree. Same idea here.

The Looney Left of the FF party as VB put it last night. I look forward to participating in some direct action with Eamonn over the coming years. I wonder is he any good on the loudspeaker? ;)

To be fair it is also possible they didn't want to put a man with cancer of the Pancreas through leading a doomed election campaign

There was a theory about yesterday that many Cowen supporters, in the knowledge that Martin was a safe 1st, canvassed for O' Cuiv with the sole intention of pushing Lenihan down as far as possible.

Now, would FFers really do such a thing ? :p

He used it as a colloquialism. As in do everything we can and pray it is enough because there are other factors that are not under our control.

Speaking to the troops in Donegal SW.

Hitler had the same sentiment about his party - and look how that worked out.

His seat in Galway West is seen as very safe in the upcoming election. None of the other challengers to Martin appear to have seats as safe. It would be embarassing for FF to elect a leader to would then lose his seat. This was the key advantage O'Cuiv had above Lenihan & Hanafin.

I thought he came across quite well on VB last night, much better than some of the other FF people that they had on in previous nights.

    This is true.

Someone should have a look at his business achievements *cough* and what brought him to Connemara before politics

I was hoping he'd win. That would be the end of Fianna Fail, which would be a happy day. I guess, now all I can hope for is Martin makes him first mate. A good successor for Coughlan!

Yep, I'd be pleasantly surprised if he doesn't top the poll in Galway West again.

He does not come across as too bright to me. Did I hear correctly on VB TV3 last night that he may be a Presidential candidate? I do believe that he came second as Biffo supporters backed him over Lenny as payback? He is bland inoffensive and no political heavyweight.
