no NCT cert on a 2005 car I just purchased

    Hi all,

I have just purchased a car.

There is currently no NCT certificate with the car (year 2005) and I would like to book the car for one as soon as possible.

The previous owner never applied for one!

Should I wait until I receive the ownership registration log-book from the department of transport first before making my booking?

I presume the change of ownership will take a week or so to take affect.

My mechanic is currently on vacation until the 7th of February.

So, perhaps I should wait until the 7th of Feburary before
making a booking in order for my mechanic to have time to make the necessary checks and servicing prior to booking the NCT. In this instance, would you recommend this course of action?

Wait until the car is in your name obviously.

If the car is driving fine with no obvious issues (worn tyres/lights out) stick it through the test and see what happens.

    Hi there,,
I think a quick call to the NCT centre would sort that out for you...They will tell you if you should apply,or wait until you have the paperwork.

As for the mechanic,,personally,,unless there is something obvious that is wrong with the car,and needs fixing,I wouldn't spend more money on the mechanic.

The best way to find out is to go through the NCT,and then you will find out exactly what is wrong with the car...If anything.

    Best of luck with it.

Or to phrase it differently for the OP, what date was the car first registered?

It could very well be the case that the NCT cert you come into possession of if/when the car passes may only be valid for a number of weeks before having to put it through again.

Not too sure what happens in the case of sitting a test for the first time once the two year mark has been exceeded. Someone here will surely enlighten us though.

you get two years from the date it was due but since he can test 3 months early mabey he can get onto the second nct

You cant book an NCT when the car is not in your name. However if you call them with the VIN number (chassie #) They will be able to advise you if they can book it before you recieve your paperwork

You need the regestration document as they do ask for this when you arrive at your appointment. :D

I've never been asked for it.

    13. How can I best prepare for the NCT and what documents should I bring?

Please prepare for the test by ensuring that:
    1. Your car has adequate oil and water. 2. The boot is empty and seats are clear of personal belongings such as removable baby seats. If the baby seat is left in the car for the NCT, it will be checked that it is fitted correctly.

    3. The vehicle is reasonably clean (especially the under body).

    4. The wheel hubcaps are removed (only in the case where the wheel nuts are not visible) and the tyres are inflated to the correct pressure.

    5. The engine is in a fit state to be tested e.g. Cam belt/timing belt. You may be asked to sign a disclaimer at the test centre.

    6. Seat belts and clips are fully visible.

    7. Your registration plates comply with current regulations.

    8. NCTS recommend that you have your lights checked and set prior to the NCT.

    9. Please ensure you bring identification (Driving licence or Passport only) with you as you will be asked to produce this when presenting your vehicle for inspection at the test
    centre.
    10. Please ensure your vehicle is at a normal operating temperature prior to arriving at the test centre for inspection.

If the above items are not taken care of, NCTS may be unable to test your vehicle. And of course , don't forget to bring your vehicle registration book, registration certificate or licensing certificate and your test fee!

The car was originially from the UK and I think he registered it here in May of 2009.

I need to verify from the paper work at home tonight.

So, my guess is that I will only have the certificate a few months before having to do it again.

In general, has anyone had experience with be stopped by a garda?

Would they be understanding that I have just purchased a car (Monday) and it was not my fault the previous owner never got an NCT when he should have?

Also, would not having an NCT be flagged if one was caught with a GoSafe camera van.

I passed one the other day and I am not 100% sure if I went over the limit. My worry is I will recieve a penalty points for both speed and NCT.

    Currently my licence is clean.

You have a perfectly good reason then and this will stand to you

    Hi stephendevlin,

I'll give them a bell tomorrow (I will have my documentation with me regarding VIN number and date of registration on Irish plates etc).

My mechanic has to change the front disks as they are slightly warped (wobble in steering when breaking). So I am kind of caught with waiting for my mechanic to install the disks and give it a good service. I hope the NCT will give me until early Feb to get the car sorted.

I'd have insisted the previous owner NCT'd it before buying tbh. What happens if something is seriously wrong with it?

It's also illegal to drive currently, and could land you in trouble irrespective of when you bought it.

Guards know that you cant get an appointment for a long time so every chance they will let you off.

Unless there was an obvious point (car banjaxed) then they would proceed

Sorry, but there is no good reason for driving a car without an NCT?

(other than taking it to a garage or NCT test)

So if they cannot offer me a reasonable timerframe to get my car NCT'd I have to suffer a car loss?????

Strictly speaking, yes. However, I drove for 2 years in a car without putting the NCT disc up (06 to 08) and no-one ever asked about it. Was waved through checkpoints etc.

So I don't think the guards are too bothered. Get an appointment, carry the appointment letter with you, and give 'em the whole "yes officer no officer, very sorry officer" routine and you should be OK.

I got through to the NCT center and I am no booked for the 18th of Feb.

So hopefully I will be safe enough with regards penalty points for not having it. I have a receipt of date of car purchase and I have a text notification from the NCT of the date of test.

Car was 1st registered on the 15th of April 2009. So I guess I will only, get a valid NCT for 2 months.

I wonder if I could get them to issue 2 NCT's, one for the remaining 2 months of 2011 and one for 2011-2013, given one should be able to book in advance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,786 ✭✭✭slimjimmc

No, because you're getting the NCT done (and passed) within 3 months in advance of the due date (April 2011) your new certificate will be valid for 27months i.e. from 18th Feb right through until next renewal (April 2013).

    Hi,

Is there is anything I need to say to them or will they automatically provide the 27 month period.

I presume, they'd love me to come back twice for the money.

    They will automatically do it.

I could be wrong, but as the due date was 2009 and not 2011 the nct will only issue a cert for 2 months.
