    Hey all,

Got an iPhone 3 last August, before christmas I noticed the home button getting temperamental, then after christmas it stopped working, not only this but it started flicking between screens and trying to ring phone numbers randomly from my contacts through the voice activation system.

Long story short- brought back to Carphone warehouse- sent back to apple- told the damage was not covered by warranty and it would cost 210 euro to fix (it cost me 299!) I can't afford this and took the second option for them to send it back to the shop and for me to take it up with apple direct (was told they have a place in Sandyford)

Does anybody have advise on this? I find it hard to take that it was caused by excessive ware and tear as I have really looked after it, there is not a scratch on it. Anybody had similar problems or any dealings with the pace in sandyford?

    Thanks in advance.

Don't know were you mean in sandyford, be careful leaving it in somewhere to be 'fixed'. Unless the place is an authorised apple repair centre your warranty will be invalidated.

Anyway I've recently had my iPhone 4 replaced due to a faulty home button. I rang the apple tech support and found them very helpful to deal with. After a few simple questions the guy had approved a replacement for me. I realise your 3GS has been sent to apple already but maybe try give them a ring. If it's covered by warranty try everything you can with apple first.

Cheers, I've not got the phone back from the shop yet so haven't got the details about the place in Sandyford. Glad to hear tech support were good and accommodating i will give them a call.

If I'm getting this correctly, you returned it to CPW, and they sent it to their "repair" centre? Now they have advised you to contact Apple directly?
Firstly, There are no authorised Apple repair centres for iPhones in Ireland. Ring Apple direct, or go on to the support part of their website and organise the collection of the phone for replacement, unless of course, this has been done already. The only problem I would see if it has been caused by moisture damage.

    This is my understanding.
The only problem I would see if it has been caused by moisture damage.

How can this be established i wonder? The only way this could have happened is when I have used the phone with a sports armband (which can get sweaty) when running.

There are water damage indicators in the phone. If you look into the earphone jack or the dock/charger jack and see orange or red, the phone has been exposed to moisture and apple wont cover repair under warranty.

I don't think it was my fault, the only way it could have got moisture damage is when i used it with a sports strap running and i feel this is unlikely as i was mostly out running in sub zero temp over the xmas/new year, so there wasn't much sweating going on!

Apple's warranty is the standard cover against manufacturing defects.
