that i got for xmas in 2003 (i think)
well long story short, ipod kinda packed in after about 3 years constant use.
i kept getting a folder icon with a ! mark on it,turned it on,same problem again when i turned it on tonight so i googled it,turns out giving the ipod 3 or 4 bangs on the right hand corner fixes it and it did!

question now though, how do i use it,add music to it etc and keep my iphone seperate in itunes?

manually manage the music on the 2 of them.... i have 3 ipods here in the house, 2nd gen 20GB, 4th gen 60gb and an ipod touch 2nd gen 16gb. i've never auto sync'd an ipod since they came out.

im sorry, how do you mean manually manage the music?
is there any other way of getting music onto an ipod without using itunes?
id rather use "other" software for the ipod and keep itunes for my iphone.....

You have the option of auto sync'in or manually managing content on the summary tab. the above link explains it. You can drag files from any folder on the computer into itunes and place it on the device.
