Lamp shy Charlie

I was out for a quick scout around tonight and I saw a couple of foxes all lamp shy.
They ran as soon as the light came on. No hanging about just scarpered.
It must be someone out lamping and not hitting their target. In otherwords educating Charlie.
Anyway persistence paid off and as I came into a long boggy field I saw a pair of eyes. But just like the 2 I saw previously he turned and ran. So I turned off the light for a min and turned on the caller on a distress call for half a min or so. Then flicked on the light for a second. He was still moving away from me so I guessed he had no intrest in the caller. He would however look back for a second every time I switched on the light and then turned and moved off again so I decided this had to be done quick or not at all
I got my self into a prone position on a grassy knoel and flicked the safety off and flicked on the lamp. Then sure enough he turned for a look which gave me a pair of eyes as a target. Quickly but steady I put the cross hairs over the eyes and a jentle squeeze on the tikka and it was all over for this weary dog fox. One less for the farmer to worrie about

He was a little shy of 300y which would explain the drop of the bullet. I was aiming for the eyes and it dropped into his neck. Dead before he hit the ground.

It sickens me the amount of lamp shy foxes thats about.
Seems like a lot of people need to spend more time shooting at paper.

If it gets any worse we will need to invest in some night vision.

well in fairness this is the time of year that you will meet lamp shy foxes ;) the population is at it's lowest just before spring , all the easy foxes have been shot ,leaving the cute hoors !!natural selection artificially speeded up if you like :D
it dosn't have to be lampers that make a fox lamp shy id imagine a near miss with a car at night would put the mockers on charlie too

Poulo6.5, I zero'd my tikka at 25yds as the trajectrory is quite flat. Can I ask what moderator you use and what bullet drop you expect at distances greater than 200yds when you are using the moderator? I use Remington hollow points and Hornady V-Max.

Well done Poulo, that's a good shot :D I got a call the last night from a farmer come horsey fella I know, he had a fox. Went to have a look and not one, not two, but three foxes...

    All lampshy

Bait and watch it with the Yukon Ranger methinks, then, like yourself, "now or never" shots.

Oh, how much did he weigh? Or were you taking his temperature :pac:

I shot a couple of bunnies and left it out for them so as to connect the shots to a free meal. I have seen foxes coming into investigate after shots fired.

The fox weighed in at an average 17lb which I would consider normal. However he didn't look like he had his dinner yet but he was in good condition. But nothing like the size of the last few I have shot. That's why I started weighing them.

When it comes to lampshy fox you have nothing to loose when taking a long shot as they are already shy

That fox must be weighting all the rabbits he's getting.
Good shot paulo that rifle shoots well. It's not easy to take a fox at 300y on the lamp

Hard to answer that question as there are a lot of variables. Scope hight, barrel length and bullet weight to name a fiew.

    With 55 gr v-max I O'd at 200 and it was 1 high at 100.
My scope is 2" high from Centre of my barrel.
A lower scope would give you a different trajectory. But not bu much

Nice shot paulo. quick question did you take the shot under the P7 torch or another lamp?

I'm guessing the P7 won't have the legs to get out to 300y

No the night was a bit hazy and the batteries were not fresh. I did shoot a few bunnies with the p7 tho. And it does work well. I'd say it would be good out to 120-150 in ideal conditions. That's where most of my shooting would take place

For that shot I was using my clulite. And that was at it's max reach at that.

Myself and Rick came across one a few weeks ago, he started running as soon as the light went on.I started shouting at the fox and eventually he stopped at about 200 yards away to give rick the perfect oppertunity to cliam his firs fox with his new .243 Tika T3 lite....we were using my lightforce striker so illumination wasn't a problem ...he missed :o just down to inexpierience... has happened to us all
next time that fox sees a light he is going to close his eyes and put his paws over his ears....and then if it was avixen she will provide a few easy targets after the summer ...If there weren't lamp shy foxed they start getting scarse ;)

Myself and Term2 had the opposite happen to us the other night:mad: the bloody fox wouldn't move, it just sat there too far for my .17hmr to hit, we tried the electronic, mouth caller and even used my hand to call but the bloody thing just wouldn't move. We ended walking into the field to get a shot but he ran to the top of the field and did the same again:( we finally had a chance to take a shot but his luck was in, he was right in front of a farm yard:mad: and due to it being so close to the farm we left it... Pain in hole:pac::pac:

a guy living i know from south tipp recently told me of another guy from his area that owns a pack of hounds that runs with a hunt. he goes out in august and september when cubs are really starting to hunt for themselves, and calls them in under a lamp then fires two shots of a shotgun over their head to educate them. that way he guarantees himself foxes for his hunt., he doesn't give a crap about the damage he's doing to the game in the area by doing this

Well that's just Rude:mad: that's just spiteful. I have heard of the same thing years ago up in Newry, one of the larger hunts men used to do the same thing.

He must be getting out there regularly. I come across lots of lamp shy fox.
But what can you do. If it was to easy why would you bother.
I felt like I earned the fox in this tread. It tested my nerve and ability to fire straight under pressure.
Anyone can take an easy shot.

Having said that. That man in question obviously doesn't care about the damage they do
