Davie McPhail is very good. Check out his you tube page, some of it is a bit advanced though.
    Here is a basic fly.

This may be more suitable for someone starting out.

The guys in your local tackle shop where you bought your flies may tie one up while you watch, if asked.

There is a book in the Complete Fly Fisherman series called Fly-Tying Techniques & Patterns by John van Vliet. It has a shed load of info for beginners and a decent library of patterns.

The library is a good idea.
If they have or can get Veniards books on fly tying you will have an excellent start.

I bought a few books when I was starting but there's so many step-by-steps and videos on the web I never really used the book.

    Lads,

David Cammis is an elder flytyer with a wonderful soothing approach to tying. His son or grandson runs his website. Everything is free and there are lessons for all grades.

All the videos are also on youtube. I watch them and I don't even tie flies! (Yet!)

He's my favourite, reminds me of Jack Hargreaves, who had a wonderful country programme on utv many years ago.

Out of Town with the unusual country tools and fishing mixed together!
Thanks for the reminder. That was a fine fishing/country life programme!
There is nothing like it now unfortunately, though Hugh Miles two series are outstanding. But Jack documented and recorded many country ways that have since disappeared into history.

For those who never saw Jack Hargreaves: there are some clips available:

and here on picnicers' fires which destroy so much rare animal habitat:

and here he was fishing with Mitchell 410, quill float and maggot bag in a gale:

Just wondering what fly materials suppliers people use? Going to try it again (have the tools etc at home) and don't know any good sources.

I get loads of stuff from Cabelas and Bass Pro in the States. Materials are pretty light so even though you pay international shipping the cost isn't too bad. On this side of the pond, Lakeland are good. Glasgow angling centre would be a last resort since they are frequently out of stock and make some dodgy substitutions just to fill an order. Keep an eye out for stuff you can get for free as well, like feathers and fur from any shooting friends and bits of yarn from the aunties knitting circle (not a windup either- i got a ball of angora yarn that is perfect for walkers may fly nymph this way). Christmas is a good time for getting loads of different colours of tinsel in the likes of tesco and homebase.

Celtic Flycraft in the UK are not bad either.
