    Hi Peeps,

We have a 2002 Opel Astra 1.4 petrol. Everything was going fine and it still kinda is except when the engine is running there is a clicking noise, it starts loud but quiet ens down a bit when enging is running. The car starts fine and no warning lights come on when we're driving or anything. I think the noise is coming from the centre of the car in between the wipers just at the dash area. maybe something to do with alternator? any idea's?

    Thanks

I remember that sound on my 99 opel astra just before the engine seized at 98,000 mile

Im not a mechanic and you should wait for their advice, but if its coming from the engine and its a ECO-TEC model , it wont be good.

There was GM oil in my yoke and it was still clicking . Replaced it with fresh oil got rid of the noise for a few days but the clicking came back hard and loud while driving and i stopped the car but too late engine died... ( I had just checked the oil as i could hear a faint clicking there was oil before this journey)

Car went to the scrap yard and i went to the pub.

Hydraulic tappets can click when the car is low on oil, sometimes they need to be replaced.

It was the oil level, I checked the dipstick and wiped it till it was dry. Left it for few mins and turns out there is little or no oil in it. Put a litre into it and it calmed down and stoped , Only did the litre cause the car was going for a service today anyway. Now we think timing belt has to be done and shocked replaced. well so the mechanic said at opel garage :( belt was last changed (according ti service history at 37,000) but its now at 114,000 and it still has not snaped. Something telles me it was changed since but it was never recorded.

If you don't know for sure change it!
It's not worth gambling on it.
Changed the cambelt in the GF's car, the one in it looked in good nick, but I changed it anyway because I had no way of knowing when it was last done, if in doubt, always change it.

I'd be inclined to agree with you there, as no belt could last that long, but it still would do no harm to change for added piece of mind.Did you check for leaks?

Leaks? Where? I looked at the belt yesterday took off the cover. It looks to be in good nick its a bit shiny tho. I know this means its worn but not sure how shiny is bad. Everything else seemed to be in good nick around it. It was almost spotless under the cover.

Didn't you say the oil level was down? Have a look around the engine to see if there is any obvious leaks.

37k to 114k is only 77k miles, a belt with a 60k change interval might easily make that. I'd change it too.

@OP - When you get the car back after the service, check the oil immediately and then weekly.

Well it depends on the interval.I don't know what it is on Astras, but I would be changing it somewhere between 60-70k.I know some makers recommend 100k miles but that does seem way too long. You cant be too careful with belts.

Every 40000 miles on the g type astra.

Very true. I was just making the point that it might well be the same belt since 37k, in which case it should be changed immediately. The fact that it's looking shiny makes me more concerned that this might be the case.

Well if that's the case, then its way overdue at even 60k.

Hello. I have a 2002 Opel Astra hatch, 1.4 L Petrol car. The engine seized while driving on motorway therefore I need a new engine. My mechanic is unable to locate one in the west of irl. Any idea's? ?

Google partfinder.ie and have a look on Donedeal. You have to decide if its worth spending the guts of 1k on parts and labour on a car that's probably not worth much more.
