i hav a 22 year old female friend who cannot live at home due to conflict at home. she is currently unemployed on job seekers allowence and is living with a male friend. She has applied for the rent allowence but has been declined because of his income even tho they are not in a relationship. the social keep saying that they need seperate leases to gain rent allowence, now she is moving into a different house with a male and female friend but has been declined. Anyone no anything that she can do?

Thems the rules, I'm afraid. And they are likely to get tighter. Only suggestion I can give is that there's an election coming up. A chance to make the f**kers earn their vote.

When you said she is living with a male friend, Is she paying rent?.. if so, I can't see any reason why she can't get a lease in her name. AFAIK she would need to be paying rent for 6 months before being eligible for rent allowance.

The JSA rate for 22 year olds is €144. I know a guy who rents a room all inclusive for €55. Sure, €89 isn't a lot to live on but trust me, it's definitely do-able! I'm sure your friend will manage until she gets a job.

I'd imagine there is a clampdown towards the rent supplement which is actually keeping rent prices artificially high. Community Welfare Officers may be able to give discretionary payments (possibly a bus pass?) towards interview expenses. And of course your friend will probably be eligible for a medical card.

ya she is paying half the rent her name is on the lease aswell as his name. they social say that she needs her own lease even tho the estate agents wont give seperate leases. 89 quid aint alot of money when you have esb, heating and food to pay as well as petrol and tax for her car she is barely surviving as it is and it seems that the social would rather have her on the streets than getting rent allowence

Why the hell does she have a car? To drive to the dole office so she doesn't have to walk?

I have zero sympathy. I'm working at the moment and don't have a car because it would cost too much to run.

Many families and owner-occupiers who have a room for rent often include ESB, heating and internet in the price (check daft.ie, there's no shortage!). The place I'll be renting from 1st February is a bit of a bargain in that cable and internet are also included! No, I'm not renting with a friend, just from someone who advertised a room all inclusive that was within my budget.

If your friend wants a better lifestyle she'll just have to find a job.

PS I'd rather see her on the streets than getting rent allowance when she's running a car.

1st of all she has handed in numerous cvs and went to job interviews but with all a negative outcome. the last job she had was 12 miles from town nd she would hardly walk that therefore she has a car (which is on donedeal she is trying to sell)

    Okay.

Well, rent allowance-wise. She's not eligible at present. I told you about some other things she may be entitled to.

Obviously given her present circumstances she has no need to buy petrol or pay for insurance. If she can't manage on the dole maybe she should visit MABs for financial advice?
