There are two types of VAG TDI in your price range.

Up to the year 2000 is the VE TDI.
    90 horse power and 110.

You also had the 130 hp PD TDI.

The PD TDI was the next generation. Main problems that stem from them is that by now bad maintenance has damaged them.
They are picky on oil and even some dealers did not know what oil to use.

At around 2000 to 2003 the VE TDI's were all replaced by PD and you got loads of different horsepower outputs including 90 and 110 so it can get confusing as hell.

The advice is that if you go for a 2002 + TDI make sure that it has been well maintained. Ok that is the same with any car but I would call up common garages and un-common ones on the service history to ask what type of oil they would use on that engine.

There could also be some other inherent problems with the PD TDI but from what I have researched a well maintained PD will be fine though the older VE's are widely regarded as the most bulletproof TDI out there.

You are really looking for a spotless car and a perfect service history for a PD TDI but for the VE you can generally get away with less TLC over its life.

Once the car is bought make sure that no matter what TDI it is you use only what is meant to be used in it oil wise. The least you can do is prolong its life and make sure for peace in mind that you are doing it correctly.

    EDIT:
Its bloody confusing  I was lucky that I couldnt afford a PD TDI when I was buying my car so I could ignore the headaches of buying one :p

    Roughly,
Up to 2000 and you have VE except for 130 hp models.

    2001 to 2003 you have a mix.
    After you have PD.

That is a VE TDI engine cover

I think that is the PD. bit the first picture is defo a VE.

This is what I heard over on TDIclub.com so I tend to agree with it.
