Knitting Help - Baby Cardigan Rib

I'm on the end of a cardigan for a baby, the rib is a pick up and knit one which I have done. I am confused on the button holes. Looking at the two rows for the button holes:

    Row 1:
Rib 4, cast off 2sts, (rib 7, cast off 2 sts) 2 times, rib to end

So there I have: 3 sts, gap of 2, 7 sts, gap of 2, 7 stst gap of 2 and then rib to end

    Row 2:
Rib to last 20 sts, cast on 2sts, (rib 8, cast on 2) 2 times, rib 4

I thought I would be casting on top of where I cast off but I now have (for last 20:
    3, gap of 2, 7, gap of 2, 7 gap of 2, 3

What am I doing wrong? Is there any way to do it without ripping back the row and create the buttonholes from what I now have? Also, what did I do wrong!?

    Thanks!
    PC

You can just cast on over the gap where you cast off if you like, just check that you're happy with the position of the buttons.
When you cast off for the first buttonhole, did you use one of the 4 stitches already on the right hand needle? You probably shouldn't have. Also when ribbing 7 between the holes did you count the stitch left after casting off?

How many sts have you on your needle before you start row 1......I will then knit it myself and get back to you.its easier for me to talk you through it that way. But as MatureStudent stated it also sounds as if youv'e gone wrong.Someone else may get back to you before then, but my offer stands..:)
